Tell Me Something I Don't Know!

This is very interesting... but - isnt the French word for cow - Vache? The French word for Beef is Beouf. I am intrigued to know why we use the word beef for cow meat in the first place, or I guess why the French called it Beouf?
The French have (Normans had) seperate words for the animal and the meat it produces. Maybe the Saxons did too but their words disappeared.
I would imagine the Saxon farmers/butchers continued using their word for the animals they were working with while the Norman rulers insisted that everyone referred to the meat by their names.

Language is weird

Didn't know he was there.
I was at the Berlin Wall in the mid-1980s when it was still up, and you had to walk up a ladder and stand on a walkway to see it properly.
When it came down, Karl(ex Luftwaffe) invited me and Anne to stay with him and Gerda in Berlin, which we accepted. He sent me a small piece of the wall, so I asked if he could get a bigger piece for when we visited. Did he? When we got to his place, he disappeared, then a few moments later came back with an almost square piece of the wall, about 1' x 1'. I don't know how I got it through German customs in my luggage, trying not to walk lopsided with the weight!
As Karl was in the Battle of Britain, I donated it to the Kent Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge as a 'gift' from Karl, who had died several years previously.
