The thing is, how can they possibly hope to manage things? I posted an article from the Economist earlier in the thread where they were speaking to graduates from the top technical college in India about where they'd like to work. Many who were previously pro-England were being massively put off by the change both in tone and policy lately.

So that's very smart people being put off by policies the government has full control over. You'll have to forgive me for thinking they'd make a complete balls up of any attempt to 'manage' population movement.

In my opinion, that is the fault of UKIP and the right-wing press and it's effective use of nonsense propaganda.

Personally, I think that this country needs to curb benefits given to migrants however I am strongly of the opinion that immigration has been, is, and will forever be a positive for the country and I would hazard a guess that the sensible citizens of this country do too.

Saw a post by 5 Live on twitter this morning, some Romanian saying 'I have to sleep in a park'. Makes you wonder why they bother to come here in the first place. Wonder if they slept in a park in Romania? I doubt it, if they've been able to pay for the ticket to get here.

Surely no-one, regardless of your politican colours, can see any benefit for people like the above being allowed to come to the country. No benefit for the individual, that's for sure, and no benefit to the UK either.

The thing about the welfare though I suppose is that I kinda thought it was a European thing. So if you'd worked for 10 years in Britain, then moved to Poland or somewhere in the EU, because you've paid in in Britain, then you're treated as though you've paid in in Poland too.

That's how I thought things worked?

Hard to judge individual circumstances via a tweet isn't it? They may have come here with a job, lost the job and ended up homeless and with no money to go home? Lots of things may have happened. As you say, it doesn't seem likely that they would find the money to travel to a foreign country in order to sleep rough during winter.

But shouldn't that be part of the whole process as well, to ensure that you're sufficiently sorted for money, job (can never be guaranteed but perhaps the govt need to work to look at minimum term contracts to help migrants establish themselves) and accommodation ie will you wind up in a park if you lose your job.

Pretty sure when I got my Aus working holiday visa, I had to prove I had some money, name my accommodation and provide a contact should I be struggling.

using an isolated incident to argue on a very generalised subject, always a dreadful and desperate argument

I'm hardly saying 'send the buggers back', I'm merely highlighting the kind of situation that can happen, and why they would choose to come in the first place. I can't fathom what they stand to gain from the trip.

Given how bungling the government seem to be in so many areas, I wouldn't want to rely on them to do anything positive in this area at all. Where people choose to live has nothing at all to do with any government.

The kind of situation that can happen to anyone in any form of life, it's hardly a case against immigration because one guy rang up a radio station, there would have to be a trend, a proven one for it to be relevant

tbh I have no idea lol

It's not a case against immigration! It's a case against the logic of people coming over if they don't have something solid in place. I completely accept that this chap may have had something and now he doesn't, but why stick around? Surely he must have family back home, why would you stay?

Saying that, probably can't afford to get home. Perhaps the govt could offer assistance to those who are really struggling and do wish to return home. Would not be a large number I expect, and is better than having folk living in parks.

I might be wrong and all that, but I've been researching moving to Czech a bit recently, and can vaguely recall something about being ok for Czech healthcare because of my NI contributions here, or something along those lines. I don't know if anyone can confirm that or indeed whether it extends to other things?

There's a charity that kind of does that, but going by their financial records, I'm not sure how successful they are, nor indeed if they even operate still (thinking perhaps not).
