Same thing happened across the park. FSG came in and trusted the wrong people because they were new to football ownership. They let Commoli talk them into overpaying for a bunch of players because he forgot that they can't all take penalties.

They had one good season, then it all went sideways. They underperformed for years. Eventually they recovered from the initial mistakes, got better people in charge and turned the battleship in the right direction.

We just haven't gotten quite far enough in our own version of that story yet. Our version will be longer and more painful, because of their deal with the devil. Sooner or later, though, that guy's soul gets claimed and the curse ends.
