Extra rest always helpful in a long series. They could easily end up bowling on every day of this match at some point. It all adds up. The bowlers were knackered by the end of the Edgbaston test due to not batting long.

Sadly I think you are right. He really hasn't looked threatening at any point in this series. Age catches up with everyone, even Jimmy. I was surprised he was picked for the Oval. He hasn't justified his selection with current form and has a poor record there. Should have picked Tongue.

He's the second best fast bowler of my lifetime after McGrath, and the best for England by far in that time, and nothing will change that. But it's disappointing to see him so far off the levels he's reached in the past.

I shouldn’t be annoyed but I was when he got the nod over Tongue. I know Stokes said he is one if the greatest fast bowlers ever but it smacked of sentimentality a bit

I get what you're saying, but I think you've got the context wrong. We could have batted the same amount of overs today and been all out for 180. They put lots of chances down. Our bowlers have had plenty of rest since the last match and if they're not fit we had tongue to come in.

Who knows, we might bat plenty of overs in the second innings, but Monday is a washout so it's basically a four day test so we have to score quick to win and draw the series and Australia only need a draw
