TMS has just had the most fantastic content. First, Cook and Vaughan discussing captaincy and retirement, then Athers and McGrath discussing their rivalry over the years, and how/why Athers got out to him so much. They are clearly good mates these days, but just fascinating having 4 world class cricketers chatting like they were down the pub.

That revelation from Atherton about numerous cortisone injections was a little troubling. Also the comments re psychology and mental well being. "get on with it" being the old method...

Everytime Bumble spoke on Athers he says you could at least 5 to that average if you take away the back troubles.

As skipper he also basically had to take training and sort out the admin when ray illingworth was manager

He is very candid about it in his bio. One of the best sport bios I have read btw. It is a genetic condition he inherited, which basically means some vertabrea kind of soften/disintegrate. The steroids were not just pain relief, they slowed the process in his back. He also had stuff injected to glue them back together. There is a famous photo of him and Alex Stewart when they both got their 100th caps in the same test. Athers face is bloated down to the steroids.

Good read that, he's a very decent writer.

Tis triffic. Totally honest, and ego free. And also very very entertaining. His passage about THAT dual with Donald is fabulous.
I was really into my county cricket then with Lancashire being my county, so also loved hearing about Fowler, Austin, watkinson etc. Also, I think Athers is the only man who wanted John Crawley to succeed with England as much as I did.

You got the impression he preferred playing for Lancs, well, the one day team they had back then. "Not for us hanging around in the cold at Derbyshire for a batting point" ! If it still in print, I would recommend "Opening Up" to anyone in this thread.

There's nothing stopping Australia winning this on day 5 apart from the rain, records are there to be broken, and Broad and Anderson look a bit flat combined with the strange decision to wait for any reverse swing for Wood gave Aus a real head start. Of course they're just as likely to collapse in the morning but it will be a very entertaining last day if Aus want to make it one.
