It was on Sky News.
I know they have a mostly English audience. Its just amazing that they see it as more important than people dying.

Well it's an English station my friend. England have just won the ashes. I'm fairly sure in Greece the fire is the main headline, as I would doubt that in Greece they don't report on deaths in this country when they won the Euro Champs.

Woh mate, be careful what you say.

What?

I'm basically saying that what happens in the UK is in the UK, and what happens in Greece is what happens in Greece. The two don't need to mix, unless it's a story worthy of worldwide coverage.

It may well reach that level of coverage, but England winning the Ashes is massive and can not be ignored. I'm sure the 70 who died are worth talking about, and it's sad. But what about plane crashes? more people have died in a plane recently but unless it's terrorism it's not headline news.

The media put out what the public want.

The Ashes is national news, which is what Sky News is. News for the UK. Then if the world news is worthy of sensationalism, like for example the Tsunami or 9/11 then it becomes headline news as it's what the people want to read about.

I would agree with you about Greece. however there was other news including the death of 2 members of a family in a car accident in Bulgaria.
Also the arrest of two people over the stabbing of Calum Davenport, the arrest of a man after knife attacks on eight people in Keighley, West Yorkshire. So how can they deem sports news more important?

Well the Calum Davenport issue was yesterday.

To be honest mate sporting victory's are good for the feel good factor, bring the nation up, put a smile on people's faces.

Don't know about you but I get sick of reading bad news or hearing it on Granada Reports.

I welcome good news. People dying just doesn't bother me anymore, you become immune to it. The whole Afghan war death toll is just not news anymore as it's ongoing etc....

Unless the news is incredible like 9/11 then people don't care that much.

Peoples lives are more important than sport. The feel good factor should be saved until after the main news, otherwise you start on a high and end up depressed, not the other way around.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. :D

There is nothing to agree or disagree on mate, that's just the way the media works. I studied it for years, and still do in some capacity.

They choose the most sensational story they can. Winning the Ashes is sensational. It's red top, it's something that many English people in this nation can relate to.

So you are saying i HAVE to agree with you?

Ive had time to cool down, well done you jammy buggers.

You do deserve it, you played well, your crowd got behind you and you basically do what the Aussies have done for years. You didnt give up, you tried something different and every single man on the park shone at some point in the series. Except maybe Bopara, but we have about 5 Boparas. He'll come good.

Stop fighting about the Greeks will ya?!

THIS IS CRICKET!!!

No if you read again it says there is nothing to agree on. The media are who they are, regardless of what me or you think about.

Also I just heard that nobody has died in Athens. So maybe that is another reason why it has not been elevated up the tree.

One example of how I can illustrate how a media story is elevated is if you ever use Newsvine. Google it. It has stories that are elevated due to the people who are reading it.
