wasn't the wicket going the other way before? or am i thinking of somewhere else?

not sure why i tuned into this ha. Been such a good week for sport, knew england would spoil it, getting no luck here, mind you created there own problems. that dolly that carberry dropped has turned this match you'd feel. needs to make it up with the bat tomorrow when he gets a chance.

Nah, always been really really long straight boundaries, strange ground.

TJ, New Zealand away.. The alarm bells started for me.

This is a good point. They had a bad series here (NZ bowled very well at them btw), which you're allowed to have, but they didn't correct any issues.

Bowlers are a concern too. Not trying to swing it, or can't. It's a massive issue.

yes, england played poorly, but new zealand did bowl well tbf. the parts i've seen of this series, it hasn't been australia bowling well, it's just been one dire shot after another. which there was a bit of in NZ.

i agree with NHD, that alarm bells were ringing with me NZ away, they were lucky not to lose the series, very lucky and had their bowlers purely to thank, nothing to do with the batsmen with the exception of the wickie.

But it did start before then, pakistan away was totally embarassing. Ajmal's class, no doubt about it but he wasn't even doing out of this world things, he was just a regular spinner with a little of a different action. Rehman though is average plodder as far as test cricket spinner goes and they played him appaulingly.

After they got a great win in india i thought maybe it was just a blip, but the way they batted in NZ made me think it wasn't so.

personally i'd take the captaincy off cook, give it to jimmy (who looks shattered, but maybe it could give him a second wind) and let cook focus purely on his batting again. He's not a great captain so i don't think it would be too detrimental, he'll get the job again in the future anyway. But he's key now, with this new batting line-up. Swann's looked poor since he came back from injury, when they go back to one spinner, maybe it would be better to go with monty over him, they all need a rest that's for sure.

think i may tune in for an hour tonight, see how it goes and will probably end up giving up watching.

This is how I see it for what it's worth...

Our batting line up is better than theirs, but our bowling attack is worse (on form right now anyway). Their bowlers are better than our batsmen though, and they key to winning a test match is 20 wickets. We don't look like getting them, they do.

Against the attack of 2 years ago, our guys flourished with the bat, but they've come along a long way. I don't agree with TJ, I think their bowlers are genuinly good at the moment, Johnson one of only 2 guys in the world capable of bowling 150kph (92-95mph) these days, Harris is fast and on the money, they're both moving the ball. Lyon's the only spinner in this game giving it a good rip, and Siddle does a nice holding role, 110% ticker. We don't have this happening for us.

Sure, we need more runs, but we had the bowling lineup of a few years ago, we'd score 250-300 and know we could defend it. Not blaming the bowling entirely, but I really think there's needs to be a good review of it. Anderson worries me, why isn't he swinging it? I'm watching Southee and Boult over here in NZ moving it both ways, a few mph quicker too. Could be the kookaburra ball, I said last year I thought he was holding it as a wrong angle.

Bit of a ramble above, but as a bowler myself, I can't help but see there's nothing much happening with our attack.

Interesting that Elong..
Who would you fancy taking a couple of quick wickets this time ?
Jimmy or Johnson ?

Amazingly Johnson for me..

Right now, Johnson's red hot isn't he? He has these moments. A few years back, he was one of the best bowlers in the world down here, but I don't think a lot of people in England would have seen it. Then he had his horror show overseas.

What's happened to the 90mph attack we used to have? That's the problem, if you're not going to swing it and bowl the lengths we bowl, you have to be quick, which we're not.

I backed a Clarke ton and for himto be next man out - didnt think both of them would come off ffs.

I rate Carberry ahving seem him many times for Hampshire I just dont have confidence in England. I read todat that it is 17 innings since we passed 400.

Carberry needs to play his game..

i think anderson is just shattered tbh, plus also age possibly catching up with him.

i'm not sure we can blame the bowlers too much, they've been great for the last year and been doing so much more work than they should have. Doesn't help that Swann's been poor since injury and can't hold and end for most of a day like he's been doing for the last few years. That 17 innings stat says it all though really.

What's Gooch teaching these guys btw? Didn't look at the overs when i saw the score overnight. 35 ooff 22 overs? why are we continually scoring so slowly? It just brings pressure upon itself, they're being way too cautious and then when they gift their wicket away they haven't added many runs. They need to take the attack to the bowlers, easier said than done obviously, but cook needs to play like a captain. Try and hit johnson off his line, they're just letting him bowl at the at the moment. They got on top of him a few years back and he cracked under the pressure, he really did. I don't think he has a string mentality, so play on that ffs. Also try and go after lyon like they do with swann, don't just let him bowl and tie up one end, that gives clarke the freedom to give the seamers short fast spurts all the time.

Can't believe England have all these coaches yet the same thing has been happening innings after innings.
