The bomb shelter thread.

The hatred is there in our regional rivalries, so we understand that part of it. But we just don’t have a proper local rivalry in America. The last one was probably the Rangers and Islanders in the 1980s, and even that was pretty temporary.

It’s hard for them to even exist in America. Teams in the same city are usually set up in separate leagues or conferences where they don’t play very often. They become like Coke and Pepsi — they’re two separate products in the market, and you just choose which one you like better. It will be a long time, if ever, before a local derby like LA Galaxy and LAFC gets anywhere close to what it’s like in England.
Genuine question mate, I’ve heard the American I think his name is Rob on the blueroom say several times one of the best things that could happen to us would be to be relegated to do a complete rebuild. Do you think this view is a product of coming from a country where there is no relegation in your team sports and so he and maybe other Americans don’t fully understand the implications of being relegated?

You do get a little bit of that in some areas. I live in Dallas and there are big groups of alumni from Texas and Oklahoma who live here. They have their annual football game at the Cotton Bowl and their fans poke at each other all the time. But again, not in the formative years.

For this you need Alabama/Auburn or similar.
Friend here in NC is Auburn alum. Whole family for generations is Auburn mad.
I was shocked the day she wore houndstooth. She was very touchy about it - "They don't own the pattern!"
Fully admitted she only wears it because no one in NC understands/cares. She'd never wear it in Alabama.

It might be. It’s a lot easier to tear your team down to the studs and do a rebuild in American sports. Not just because there’s no relegation, but there’s a draft and often a salary cap that allows for a total reset over a few years. It’s much harder to do that in the Prem. Everton can’t just waive Bolasie or send him to the minors or do an injury settlement to get him off the books like you can here.

But yes, it’s also ignoring history. Name the clubs that have come back from relegation to become a long-term success in the Premier League. The only one is Man City and they had very special circumstances.
