Me and my friend/fellow lemur researcher Chloe were bumped up to business class on the long leg of our journey from Nairobi to JFK; to be sure, it was pretty awesome since it's a 15 hour flight. But what seems to be going on is that business class provides only a bit more than the basic requirements for comfort, while coach class has devolved over the years to completely unrealistic conditions regarding comfort and spatial packing. It's like a dial where 0 denotes basic requirements for comfortable flying; business class is like turning the dial to +3, but coach class is like turning the dial to -8. It's verging on inhumane (hyperbolically speaking, of course).

I guess the main value of business (certainly on long haul) is both the space you have in your area and the lounge. These give you more freedom to spread out and make the long journey a bit more comfortable. Everything else you can kinda take or leave for me. Even access to the lounge at the airport isn't that big a deal imo. No idea if it's common, but many business class tickets also fast track you through customs, which I'd imagine would be great if customs is normally a pain, like in the US. Business class on a short-haul flight is a complete waste of time.

Tbf lie flat beds and some lounges having showers make a big difference on how groggy/grimy you feel.

In 1983 I was going from Gatwick to Houston on business. The firm I worked for was having an 'economy drive' and all flights were economy class. I was flying British Caledonian who were a customer of the firm I worked for, so I contacted our senior sales guy and asked him to drop a word in the right ear. I boarded the plane and had been sat in my economy seat for about 15 minutes while the plane filled up. Then a stewardess came through and shouted my name out. I raised my hand and she said 'please come through to first class'. Absolutely brilliant experience. The only way to fly - if you can afford it of course. Had to fly back economy though!

Wait what? You're a lemur? What do you research?
Damn good typing though. More power to you.

I study a species of lemur in Madagascar (their genetics, behavior, demography, and conservation) . It's great, but getting there requires very long flights of up to 17 hours at a time and flying coach class every time is just awful. So me and my colleague were delighted to be bumped up into "high society" on one of the legs of our journey.

Kind of similar to the @Lord Buckethead point about businesses creating problems and then having the punters pay for having them removed, he gave Amazon as the example.

What an amazing job.

Sounds fascinating. What a job!

Yes, true. I prefer those that don’t seek recognition, for instance @magicjuan is definitely clever but you never see him giving it the big licks. But all the signs are there in his posts that he’s very bright.
He doesn’t try to look clever, but I think he almost certainly is.
Ha. Rumbled :)

More of a smartarse tbf, but ta for the comment ;)

Me and a few mates thought we were dead smart cos we won a pub quiz so decided to branch out and we all went to a posher boozer round the corner for their pub quiz. Got absolutely pumped. There were groups of uni lecturers and all sorts and the questions were insane. The winners were a pair of biker looking guys funny enough.
Never went back. Stayed in our local guessing intros to 90s pop songs and anagrams of wild cats.

Been a part of some successful quiz teams. Then I moved to this small Wiltshire town and the local historical society ran its annual quiz. I summoned my mates, one of whom is a historian and off we went.

Over 200 questions later our morale had been crushed by a ridiculously high brow quiz. Everybody else looked like academics (scarves, tweed jackets, the works) and were quick to write answers down and we were struggling. Eventually the scores came in and we had amassed a miserable 43 points. Only 3 behind the winning team! Somehow we were 2nd!

Got to sit at the bar on a virgin Atlantic flight to LA from Heathrow a few years back. I was in economy right up the front but the stewardess was sound and told me to go in and have a drink. There was many in business class tbf.

I was hammered getting off the flight.
