The Dead Thread

One more from my youth who passes away. RIP George Foreman, featured in what probably was the biggest sporting event of the 70's "rumble in the Jungle ". A life well lived for sure.
Same for me, that was a great era in heavy weight boxing, his fights against Frazier were legendary in the second fight he knocked frazier down 6 times and frazier was no mug.
RIP George thanks for the memories

68 ko's in 76 wins. Man was a machine, took the greatest ever to put him in the shadow. Some feat.
Foreman above.

Frazier, 27 ko's in 32 wins. 4 defeats, 1 draw. 2 losses a piece Foreman & Ali.

Foreman, 5 losses total. 1 ko loss. You know who. "To this day, Foreman holds the record as the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history."

(Side note, It's a shame Sonny Liston was owned by the mob, died aged 38, strange fact, was beaten back to back by Cassius Clay and then Muhammad Ali).

Foreman 76 years old.
Frazier 67
Ali 74
Liston 38
Joe Louis 66

I saw the Ali rumble in the jungle with George on the Empire —2-00am start jibbed in and watched my idol with his “rope a dope” routine taking a lot of punishment from George and I thought Ali was going to lose but I was absolutely thrilled when he came off the ropes in the 7th(?) round after letting George punch himself out and giving him plenty George was gone and I was up,on my feet with dozens of others screaming “ He’s ———g got him” A great moment in Sport.
Joe Frazier never went backwards, always on the front foot with his two fights with George and his three with Ali that’s one reason he lost four of them but never lost any respect with boxing fans.
Sonny Liston — read the book “ The Champ Nobody Wanted “ very sad even a lot of Black boxing fans in America wanted him to lose a lot of his fights, what a puncher and look at his record after losing those championship fights —lost one in about 17 fights but there was no way he was getting another chance of being champion again.
Ali was Ali full,of entertainment in and out of the ring, doubt if there will be another boxer like him.

No lack of respect here for Frazier. (He almost played Clubber Lang in rocky 3)
So far as the sport of boxing goes, it's zenith was that late 60's and then 70's period, middleweights in the 80's got close, but the true pinnacle was that heavy weight era. They were so good and there was less money and outside influence in it. Foreman made more money out of a grill than he did his entire sporting career. Now personalities are managed, it's endorsements, and specialist clothing ranges (Air Jordan), they can't say or show any part of their true self, just look at the mess Tyson made for himself.
Ali was clever, playing both sides against the middle, one minute the put upon stripped former champion, the next using the 'uncle tom' phrase to antagonise Foreman. I suppose the sport of beating another person has always been in the gutter. Glad king isn't involved much anymore, there's a scumbag I'll happily not miss.

Yes better with Don King out of the way he robbed boxers blind, By the way did Ali use the ‘uncle tom’ phrase to George Foreman, he did to Ernie Terrell early in his career after Terrell mocked him for changing his name from Cassius Clay to Mohammed Ali.
