The Dead Thread

I'd honestly never heard of this before the guy posted it earlier. But to be fair, we won the league before the Lineker season, and we won it the year after. I was a kid at the time but as loads have said, for all his goals, the team changed to accomodate him and all in all we were a better team without him.

Didn't know about the woofters either.
Well we obviously didn't know we'd win the league the season after when HK sold him. I was only 10 myself then but I, maybe others too, thought we were offloading a striker who'd proved to be the best in the world with him picking up the Golden Boot at Mexico '86. I wish we'd have still had him playing for us ahead of the strikers we'd had post-Lineker. None were in his class.

And I don't think Venables meant to cause offence with his 'woofters' gaff. Just a slip of the tongue from a man then in his 70s. But it caused a bit of a fuss at the time and Venables was never seen again on Sky.

I know, we're the same age near enough.

I loved Mexico 86, and I remember Lineker going to Barca, but I have to be honest, it didn't break my heart; he just wasn't with us long enough. All through the 85/86 season, as much as Lineker was banging them in, I was always thinking - why didn't we keep Andy Gray?

Kids eh?

I was gutted when we let Andy Gray go too but he didn't have much of an impact at Villa in 85/86 and spent most of it on the treatment table. Perhaps HK thought we'd saw the best of him and Andy was only going downhill from there and maybe he got it right? That said, Gray said years later he'd have turned the move down regardless of us signing Lineker if we'd had a European Cup campaign to look forward to instead of being banned.

And loved Mexico '86 too. My first World Cup and the England team being full of Everton players. Should've been more as how did Alvin Martin get in the squad ahead of Derek Mountfield and Paul Bracewell would've certainly been in the squad but for a shithouse tackle by that yard dog Billy Whitehurst.

Pathetic how causing offence has become almost worthy of capital punishment.
