The Everton Board Thread 2014/15

Is it time for change?

  • I'm happy with the way thing are. Kenwright and the Board should stay.

  • Kenwright and the board need to go. We need change.

To be fair Steve as I've said previously to various BU members let's not decend into an us and them situation.

Whilst I don't agree with the strategies deployed by the BU, they're not responsible for the running of the club so not having plans is not surprising.

Of course they'd be a much more powerful lobby group if they did.

Agreed. If there was a 'plan' I would certainly give it time of day. But it has to be based on reality and there has to be a concensus of approval. The problem they have is finding something reasonable and honest(not implying any dishonesty there) that will get the attention of the board, with the hope of starting a dialogue. In retrospect, for whatever reason, the 'interview' with Bill K and the 'BU Tape' was not a good moment for the BU, and it should have been. They have to be seen to be respectful and sensible(BOTH parties!) for starters, and not act like the worst Sunday tabloid journos!

The lack of trust on both sides is the most damaging aspect, and makes meaningful dialogue almost impossible, sadly.

Convincing the three major shareholders to settle on a realistic asking price would be a good idea too. Best of luck with that.

Problem is, what is a realistic price? In most business its the best price you can get.It is an unassailable fact that the selling price has direct impact on the board members and the whole array of small shareholders(I'm sure new owners would require the purchase of ALL shares). I've been ill since April and am not able to give this my full attention but it might be interesting to try to come up with an optimum price for Everton...although I don't think BK is the main problem there, I think its Earl who wants a good return, having missed out on the anticipated retail profits associated with DK.

The content of that tape was an even worse moment for Mr Theatre though

Not true my elephantine friend. Bill came out as the victim of underhand tactics when the dust settled. The first thing the BU should have been trying to do at that meeting was to establish a relationship with Bill/The board that would lead to further discussion and mutual trust, but the BU blew it by playing I-Spy and attempting character assassination (I'm not throwing stones there, its just the way I saw that the board would see it...hence they scurried back behind the defences and all chance of dialogue was lost.)

We'll start with this gem from the interview, can you explain how this reflects well upon our Glorious Chairman ?

Bill went on to tell a story concerning Keith Harris; he’d put forward two guys who, in his opinion, were suitable potential owners of Everton Football Club. Harris claimed the two guys controlled a hedge fund; one was the head of ICI in the Far East and a second an inventor. They conducted due diligence and Everton were ready to sign an agreement when Bill smelt a rat; investigators discovered that ICI had never heard of the person concerned, he actually lived in one bedroom flat, and the second guy, the inventor, was based in Manchester.

or this one

Mark, ”The question is Bill why hasn’t it been sold?” Bill, “Why? I wish I knew….I have no idea; look, the thing I’m getting is there’s not enough money in the world; the thing is…..when was the last major sale of a football club?”

or this

Simon, “Well, that’s interesting Bill because there’s a large number of supporters who have suggested that maybe the way forward is to setup an interim board with the sole purpose of finding a buyer; would that be something that…?” Bill, “No, because I don’t agree that anyone can do a better job…it’s me, it’s me…get me Keith Harris on the phone love” (secretary).

Not trawling back through 244 pages but:

My work brings me into fairly regular contact with Mansour and his team of hangers on.

A few months after he took over city was the first time I met him, and after the usual small talk, then business and then back onto small talk I asked him "Why City?"

We looked at a few clubs, we approached Everton but recieved no encouragement to proceed.

Call it bs, agree, whatever you feel. That's what I was told. By the man himself.

Anybody who claps his fat mug next time it's on the screen needs to remember that.

If you can't see that any of the above reflects badly on the BU handling of the 'interview' in which Bill gave what appeared to be honest answers(e.g. Bill was the one who 'smelled a rat' re the 'potential buyers' that Hayes came up with.) and in which Bill gave honest opinions, there is no way forward. The main aim of the BU/BK meeting should have been to establish at the very least a desire to hold further meetings, instead of which the BU representatives acted like third rate James Bonds or Sun reporters and resorted to scoring what they thought were 'points' in this game they are playing. THey set back any hope of joint cooperation back probably too far, at least until the end of Bills term .
