Your figure of £1.25m is turnover not profit, the shirts cost how much to produce, ship and most importantly display and Stock? Retail floorspace is heinously expensive, where do you think they're going to generate enough sales to create a viable return? They're already available for US shipping with zero floorspace cost.

You've made the same mistake when looking at other club revenues, they're revenues not net profits. You're not comparing like for like.
You're honestly suggesting that Newcastle spend £14 million on their commercial activities? That is what they would have to be spending to be at our level of commercial activities.

The shirt sales are a short term byproduct of fandom - this argument wasn't even arguing against the Kitbag deal. Growing our fanbase has numerous financial returns for us, as well as improving our visibility and the way that we are handled/treated in the media. There is literally zero reason to prefer a smaller fanbase to a larger one. And growing the fanbase is the job of a marketing arm.

Edit:
If shirt sales cost us money then they are priced incorrectly. Also, having 25,000 more people buying the shirt makes us more attractive for kit suppliers and shirt sponsors...I can't fathom why selling more merchandise would be considered a bad idea.

What kind of return do you think they're making on a shirt then ffs? Those figures are turnover numbers do you understand what that actually is?

Trying to grow the fanbase is an obvious aim, but it's easier said than done and even harder to then leverage a return from that extended fanbase. Try to market the club in a vast country like the US is no mean feat, where do you start with a brand like ours? Maybe a club tour? Done that haven't we? What else practically can you do that is cost effective marketing?

Ok, lets flip it then. What HAVE they done to try to increase their presence in the US? They did feck all after Tim Howard became a household name, they did feck all after they had the greatest American footy player saying "I'd only ever play for Everton if I come back".

Like @roydo said, WE were figuring things out last year for the fn club. WE contacted people that were going to do specials on how Everton really OUGHT to be America's football team.

So I'll ask again, what the [poor language removed] have the club done to increase ANYTHING over here?

In the US, loads in my opinion. I was given Howards book this year. It is pretty dull, but that isnt the point. The way he describes the club is pitch perfect for a US sports audience, and we did nothing to latch onto that.

Probably similar with Tim in Australia I would guess.

We should buy Yedlin from Spurs. He's not going to be getting a game for them - particularly since they bought Trippier in for added competition for Walker. Yedlin would make a good back up for Coleman and Cleverley

No need for hostility mate. I'm disagreeing with you, but not upset over it. It's immaterial the return in all honesty. Even if it made us £1.25 million that's peanuts in the grand scheme. The value is in the visibility of the brand. It snowballs.

Yeah, we did do a club tour, and it wasn't a bad idea. It needs to be followed up on, we need to maybe put our (absolutely mince) American keeper out there bigging up the club. We should talk to American teams trying to break into the UK (like the NFL is trying to do so desperately) about marketing partnerships. I am not a marketing guy, I'm a technical guy. I can't tell you the precise path to success, what I can do is point out that it's something that needs to be done by marketing professionals. We need to be aiming to grow in emerging markets.

Your argument is boiling down to - it's hard, so we shouldn't try.

I agree with that. Think he's going to be a mainstay in the US team for awhile and we could make a good push to marke........ oh nevermind.

You've avoided answering the simple question I asked.

What do you propose that they do that would be cost effective and get to their target audience? It's a piece of piss to sit there saying they've done nothing.

Lets get that guy who was going to do a special on Everton. Hows that for a start? How about lets get some marketing over here showing that Tim fn Howard, MISTER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE, loves the club. Lets show that the club is similar to the Red Sox(even tho their owner owns that lot) in that they are very blue collar and can have fans easily identify with them.

Now, back to you. What has the club done?

Firstly I wasn't being hostile, secondly you patently still don't understand the difference between turnover and net profit, lastly I didn't say, it's too tough let's not bother, I was passing the ball back to you, as you were saying they should do more, easy said, but a tad more difficult when you're faced with the actual task of delivering a tangible return from your marketing budget.

Would it not be worth having our pre-season tour out there? Maybe put on some coaching clinics whilst out there? Do some sort of talent competition for young players to be given an opportunity of a contract with us? Come up with some sort of partnership arrangements with an MLS team?

They're juts radmon thoughts without any realisation of what resources would / wouldn't be needed or any idea as to how successful they might be

Does anyone US based know how that crappy Liverpool documentary they did went down over there? We could do one based purely on Tim Howard's premiership season

No. You're focusing on immediate returns. I'm focusing on the long term stability of the business. I don't care one whit if we make a tiny profit (or no profit, or even a small loss!) on growing the fanbase over the first 5-10 years. It sets us up for a better long term financial outlook, which you seem to be ignoring to bang on about kit sales.

What should we do?

The point that some are missing is a simple, but powerful one.

In the US, Everton have an almost unique selling point, plus Tim Howard. That should be the agenda, not something that every other club can do.
