The reason it's not escalated to a criminal matter is that the truth will be somewhere along the lines that either it never happened or it was "playful" in the moment. The inference of this kind of publicity was to bad mouth the supporters in order to quell the angry voices or to inflame, in order to make a scene. I think it's backfired massively.
