We beat spurs they are one of the big 6, this means we'll finish top 6 this year, win the league next year and the quadruple the following year.. Amazing what a win can do.

It is a mindset but is definitely related to what will or won't happen in the future

When assessing your level of optimism, you evaluate the present and real-time circumstances. People inevitably consider the current situation when reflecting on how optimistic they feel. After all, the point of the thread is;

I wonder how we could track Evertonian optimism in real time.

So above I’ve formulated a simple poll which the option to change your vote as often as you want to signal your general optimism about Everton at any given point.

Thats why some commenting that their optimism scores have changed in the last week. For instance, my score would have been below 2 if we had lost yesterday.

Right now, we’re sitting 16th in the table - that's why I said it'll heavily influence how people rate their optimism. Some are concerned we could be relegated based on our position. That's going to reduced hour optimistic outlook.

I voted 2 today. If we were 7th, my score would undoubtedly be higher.

It does not matter how the poll was phrased regarding 'in real time'. Evaluating how you feel about something now is not the same as being optimistic/pessimistic. They are mind sets about how things will turn out.

Your example of the position in the table directly affecting your level of optimism is also not applicable. If we were bottom 'the only way is up' is optimism, 'we're doomed' is pessimism. How things will be, that's the point.

If anything there shouldn't be a scale of optimism, but it is fun. If you aren't feeling good about the future because of our table position it is pessimism, not a lower level of optimism.

I'm going to let AI respond to you on this one;

"Optimism isn't confined to the future. It's about how we assess and respond to the present moment as well. True optimism involves recognizing current realities, processing information in real-time, and maintaining hope and confidence even in the face of challenges. It’s not about blind faith in a better tomorrow; it’s about actively finding opportunities, solutions, and positives in the now, which ultimately shape a better future."
