The Future of the Internet?

Picture of my house?

No, I don't work for any corporations. I am staunchly anti-capitalist. But I don't think what you're saying is true. In fact, I think what you're saying is a complete non-sequitr. Websites already charge people for content, Murdoch is saying that he is going to charge people to view the Sun online and ****. Like you're buying the paper. That doesn't mean he's going to strike a deal with ISPs that you can only view his site, he doesn't have that power. None of them do.

And if any of them tried it, the backlash would be severe. It won't happen.

What would you say that you are?

So you dont believe big companies are capable of filtering the internet so we can only use certain mainstream sites? And the government wouldn't back them up?

I reckon its kind of naive to dismiss it or put in the 'end of the world' category. I guess its that attitude that would allow this kind of thing to happen.

Even IF what's in this video were even partially true ... a computer would still be able to communicate with any other computer with an open data-transfer line. Even IF this were all true, you would still be able to access Web site through direct connection ... just like bulletin boards were on the Internet in the late 80s. There was an Internet before the World Wide Web (the Internet and WWW are actually two different things), and there will be an Internet after the WWW.

I actually believe the WWW will soon change or even cease to exist ... but I think it'll happen because new technology will make it obsolete. It will likely be a massive upgrade.

I don't know what it'll be like ... I'm not smart enough to envision this type of thing. But I imagine it will be something like ... instead of going to GoT to type in messages to reply for a forum thread, we'll transmit our thoughts and ideas through some more efficient manner. Voice to text? Voice to audio files? God forbid, we even think our reply and it appears on the forum???

Either way ... none of this will happen in 2012 ... probably not even 2022. But it'll happen eventually. Everything will change, but it won't be this postapocalyptic nonsense that these dolts are peddling. If anything, it will be even more "free" than it is now.

I'll close by saying this ... the Internet will continue because no one government controls it. And we can rest assured that will always remain the case, because our respective governments will NEVER be able to agree on enough things needed to harness complete control over something that is truly world wide. That's why there will never be world peace, but there will always be an Internet.

What is likely to happen is top sites like Google and Facebook are going to command a fee. Other sites probably won't, but that's my thoughts.

Mind you would it be that bad? To pay for web? Unless it's not stupidly high then I can imagine it being pretty effective. Fan sites would go (I see GOT as more than just a fansite) as they are generally put together by any old clown. I would also imagine there would be some kind of standard seal of approval before a site could enter the upper echelon of Internet, or Internet 2 as it's known.

However, the fears that these EuroGeeks are instilling in everyone is about as realistic as a German not realising that mullets are **** hair cuts.

These sites make massive amounts of money from advertising. Especially facebook. Their rates are based on page impressions. Should they start charging, I don't think their income from the subscription fees would recoup their losses based on users who can't afford/refuse to pay for online features such as these. Based on that, I don't think we'll see a massive charge-per-use movement online.

Well Sky Sports make money from advertising.

I think people are always more likely to pay for extras on TV than online. I mean, I pay an extra $5 for the sports tier that allows me all the football I want to watch.

As far as the Web, there are a few major site that charge for "exclusive content." ESPN is one ... but 99 percent of their site is free, and will likely always be. Some sites in the future might charge for some kind of "VIP content," while still remaining free for nearly all of their features.

I don't see a massive charge-per-use movement in the online market coming any time soon.

Bottom line ... nothing like what that video is spewing will come to light. Too much snow, I think, where they're from. They need to get out more and step away from the 24-7 internet connection. (says the guy posting on an online forum right now).
