The GOT Book Club

The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco.

This is definitely a 5 star or 1 star book. It depends. The plot is pretty lightweight and the mystery isn't fantastic. The exposition can be long, and even sometimes tedious. The characters are pretty much meh.

But I loved it anyway. I loved it because it scratched a pretentious little itch that enjoys being wrapped in delightful prose and wordplay. It was so wonderfully well written that I didn't care too terribly about what it was actually saying. It's one of those books that at a fancy dinner party I'd act all snooty with, but pretend I hated it around my friends, because liking it as much as I do makes me feel like a smug <swear>. And even with the flat characters - I enjoyed the characters, I liked spending time around them. I liked following the little eddies and swirls of their conversations.

In short, crap - but I loved it. Or amazing, but easily hateable. I really can't decide.

The film is good, possibly one of Sean Connerys best

I don't read fiction, I find little value in what people "make up". I am an avid reader of biographies and true accounts. I find accounts of people's lives or things they have achieved much more interesting than the product of an over active imagination.
I also prefer to watch my grandson play in an under 14 game live than watch Barcelona play Real Madrid on television.
Does that make me unusual - please feel free to comment but please be gentle as I have drink taken.
Not at all. I know a few other people who only like to read biographies and factual stuff. The main thing is that you enjoy it

I wouldn't normally recommend books as they are so diverse as are people's tastes but I just found a book in the back of a cupboard which I kept.
If you enjoy a biography with adventure throw in I recommend "Ascending the Dream The Life and Climbs of Banjo Bannon".
Banjo is an ordinary guy who grew up in Newry during the troubles and starting climbing in the Mourne Mountains and went on to climb Everest.
It is a great tale of a very ordinary man who achieved extraordinary things.
One caveat I would put in is that I met him a few times and knew some of the people mentioned in the book, but I still think if you like a biography of a person with a vest fir adventure you would enjoy this book.

Anyone ordered/read this yet?

Tbh, I love him as a singer, but I think he's an absolute weapon off stage. ( many would say he is on stage )

I've read various books about the Manchester music scene in the 80's and 90's and he comes across as a prize helmet, as does Ian Curtis ( who I also love on stage )
Morrissey's biography starts out interestingly enough detailing his pre-Smiths history and the first meeting with Marr, but descends into a massive ego fest...oh, and the most boring 50 pages or so about their court case.

Penguin Classic my arse.

Just finished this - book one of ten in the series.

Based around a Detecive Sergeant ( Logan Macrae ) in Aberdeen.

Superb read, very dark, but yet funny in places.

I'd go as far as to say that the author, Stuart Macbride is the Scottish Jo Nesbo.

"Where The Money Is" by William Rehder.

Former FBI agent assigned to bank robbery. Great book on cases he covered and what drove the robbers to do some of the crazy stuff they did.

Loved it.

Bill how does a Texan get to support Everton, not a trick question, I just wondered. I know a few lads from Texas, utter nutters.

My daughter likes NFL, Arizona Cardinals, not sure why them but that's her team.
