The GOT Book Club

Catch 22 is one of my favourite books, although not read it for a good few years now. Hope you enjoy it.
I used to be crazy about it as a student. We all were and used to go around quoting it and adopting the personae of the different characters, who were so well drawn.
I read it recently, however, and was disappointed, not to say bored.
But times change and it's still a classic - way the best thing Heller ever wrote.

A truly outstanding book : Red Platoon / Clinton Romesha.

A blow by blow account of a remote American army outpost in Afghanistan fight for survival in the face of being obliterated by a mass onslaught by the Taliban.

What makes this book different to so many others of its kind, is that the author, Clinton Romesha fought from start to finish in the battle and is very accomplished writer.

No jingoistic nonsense, massive respect to the Taliban and incredibly moving at the end.

Just brilliant and is currently being made into a film by George Clooney’s film company.

@bluebrotha77 thanks for the recommendation ;)

I'm trying the Lee Child books about Jack Reacher. Unbelievable. Doesn't the guy ever change his pants and socks?

He's obviously not bothered aboot being a hit with the lasses!

Cool...thanks for the rec. Gonna kindle it. I need some distraction right now.

Haha...I read a bunch of them. I enjoyed them for what they are: harmless page-turners where every book is essentially the same.
They are compelling in a way and they don't last too long. Jack's clearly designed to be a classic sentinel figure bestriding the earth writing wrongs. But even sentinels take a shower occasionally!

He doesn't need to resort to violence. Just takes his boots off and the bad hats are gagging for mercy.

Just finished Power of the Dog.

I want to thank the person who recommended it, as without doubt it's one of the best crime novels I’ve ever read.

Both series of Narcos Mexico without doubt have been taken from parts of this book.

Just ordered the follow on - The Cartel.

Possibly a modern classic.

A magnificent book.

It is excellent and I definitely plugged it on here, as did many others. I agree with your assessment, one of the better pieces of historical fiction around. I also read The Cartel...very good, but not as good as the original (but still great). The Border (3rd in the trilogy) just came out and I'm gonna read that soon.

Just finished the Wasp Factory as recommended by a few on here, must admit was ok but disappointed with the overall result. The ending was unexpected but left so many unanswered questions, (unless he decides to do a follow,) up but it was published in 84 so not sure if that's on the books.

You need to leave it and read it again in a few months mate.

It’s only when you read it a second time that things start to fall into place and you appreciate how good it is.

I read a lot of dark stuff and it’s up there with the best of them.

The difference being is that it’s very subtle and the darkness slowly creeps into the narrative as the story unfolds.

I’m very surprised it hasn’t been made it into a film tbh, as it has all the ingredients to be a modern classic horror.

Reading the complete Sherlock Holmes collection at the moment. Well, re-reading - read them a few years back.

It's surprising how books of that age can hold up.

Around The World in 80 Days is great too.
