The GOT Book Club

About a young lad who holds chivalry above all else who goes of to fight in wars and tournaments with nothing, determined to earn glory and riches and to become a knight. I've read it twice and may read it again an absolute stonking book. If you do read it let me know your thoughts.

I don’t read much fiction but I’ve just really enjoyed this, it reminded me of the tv series “Chance in a million“ with Simon Callow and Brenda Blethyn (if you’re old enough).

I used to be crazy about it as a student. We all were and used to go around quoting it and adopting the personae of the different characters, who were so well drawn.
I read it recently, however, and was disappointed, not to say bored.
But times change and it's still a classic - way the best thing Heller ever wrote.
Did the same, tried it years later - nah
It was epic back in the day, maybe you had to be there

Of course, like everything else. They did an adaptation recently for TV which was visually beautiful but rather lacking in substance and characterisation.

The original film version had more going for it - and I didn't care for it much either!

Difficult book to adapt for film.

@COYBL25 Started reading Red Platoon...had to force myself to put it down and go to bed. Excellent stuff. Can't wait to get back to it. Thanks for the recommendation!

I just hope the film does the book justice, as it`s got the potential to be one of the all time great war films and a fitting tribute to all of the soldiers involved.

The problem I can see with the film is what to leave out, as they were under constant attack and fighting non stop for their lives for the best part of 18 hrs !!

True.
The sum total of its sublimeness was 50% in Heller's head and 50% in you, the reader's head.

Which, tbh, is exactly as it should be with all stories - a shared deal between teller and listener

May well do that, but don't you think the end left a lot of unanswered questions that a follow up could've answered.
There won't be a follow up as Iain Banks passed away a few years back.

I've read a fair few of his now (though none of his SF yet). There are certainly common themes but the Wasp Factory really stands out in terms of being disturbing. The Crow Road is decent, as is the Quarry which I think was the last, or one of the last, published before he died.

A truly outstanding book : Red Platoon / Clinton Romesha.

A blow by blow account of a remote American army outpost in Afghanistan fight for survival in the face of being obliterated by a mass onslaught by the Taliban.

What makes this book different to so many others of its kind, is that the author, Clinton Romesha fought from start to finish in the battle and is very accomplished writer.

No jingoistic nonsense, massive respect to the Taliban and incredibly moving at the end.

Just brilliant and is currently being made into a film by George Clooney’s film company.

@bluebrotha77 thanks for the recommendation ;)
No worries lad;)

Just finished Stormbird, the first of the War of Roses series by Conn Iggulden. Bit of a slow burner, but half way through I was hooked. The story telling isn't quite up to the Bernard Cornwell standard but still a great and vivid read. I finished it and immediately ordered the second in the series.

Next up, I'm not sure. I've had the 700 page The Border by Don Winslow on my shelf for a while. Keep meaning to pick it up. Can't really cart that book around with me to the daily park outing with me lockdown-fever kid. The other option is IQ by Joe Ide
