The GOT Book Club

Just finished American Gods the other night. Not a big fan tbh. First half or so really dragged for me. Picked up when he got to Lakeside, and second half was quite good. Actually prefered the little short story at the end of the eBook version. Would be good I think if the cut down most of the first half and just made it 30/40% shorter.

Completely agree.

I really looked forward to it and thought it was a bit of a let down.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by the same author is a much better read (imo )

Read this on the strength of the recent ITV drama - the Whitehouse Farm Murders.

The author meticulously pieces together the background to the murders, the murders and the subsequent trial and conviction of Jeremy Bamber.

If you were studying the murders this would be a cracking read, but it’s really dry and detail heavy, particularly the background of the family, which in turn makes parts of it hard going.

One thing is for sure, Bamber was guilty as sin.

Loved that one - great book.
Have you read the third one, Iron Council? It's uneven and not as good - shame as it seemed to take the wind out of his sails with the Bas Lag world when he was building something exceptional.
I have it but haven't read it yet. Working through the reading backlog at a good rate presently. Moved onto the Earthsea series which, despite loving fantasy since being a child, I've somehow never read.

Got a title for that?

Sorry about that. It's called "The Knife". It's the latest in the Harry Hole series. They're really good and draw you into his world based around Oslo.
I wouldn't recommend jumping straight into this one though. What happens to characters in this might ruin earlier books.

Normally I only read non-fiction but thought I would give fiction a try. I then thought that if I am going to read fiction I might as well try some classics. Read Don Quixote, bit hard going but that might have been the translation I had. Just finished Around the World in 80 Days, which I enjoyed. Going to try Gulliver's Travels next.
Not sure how many of these I will read before returning to non-fiction but I am enjoying them at the moment.
