The GOT Book Club

Mid twenties and it was her standout book.

We studied it in English at school, but not at exam level.

Our English teacher, who was a top bloke, used to bring books in that he`d read and liked, for us to discuss ( off syllabus ).

He got me into Southern Gothic and the likes of Cormac McCarthy, for which I`m eternally grateful to him.

Non of which was on our syllabus lol
Haha.
Read Heart is a Lonely Hunter in school as well.

Wish I had your teacher though—my English teacher would just talk incessantly about her time at Yale 🤮

He was way too good for our school and was constantly getting better offers from fee paying schools, but passionately believed in state education and never took them up.

The saying, that you always remember an inspirational teacher is 100% true.

I love Cooper Clarke but I found that a disappointment, tbh.

Staying on the Manchester theme, this was good...if you can put up with Paul Morley's verbosity!

Met Tony Wilson once at a rip rig and panic gig in the warehouse in town, which was the go to place after Eric’s shut, top fella and his bird was a stunner.

Yeah I've been trying for years to work out my kind of book, and it's definitely southern gothic. Should have been fairly obvious seeing as I like that style of film and some music, but there we go

Southern Gothic is great. I really enjoy Flannery O'Connor.

Interestingly, O'Connor was very critical of the writing of Carson McCullers - basically considered it garbage. Each to their own I guess.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is on a very long list of must reads - along with her other stories. Eudora Welty is another I want to read.

Big fan of Flannery O’Connor—actually walked past by her childhood home in Savannah last year. A couple blocks away from my favorite bookstore

I shamefully have never read a full book. Read a few Haunted Liverpool books (short stories), My concentration span is woeful.
Wow . I read about 2 books a week on average.
I often have a work of non fiction on the go at the same time as a novel. Which is actually the case now as I am halfway through the Wolff book on Trump's time in the White House and also reading the latest Simon Kendrick for a bit of light relief.
I'd be lost without literature.

I suppose in the sense that it read like any junkies story: totally wrapped up in themselves and coming across as self-centred.

Also, there was nowhere near enough about the scene he found fame in - punk / post-punk.
That's fair enough. Junkies tend to be self-absorbed.

It's a pity he didn't elaborate on the scene around Manchester.

I have a Halberstam book I haven't got around to yet - The Fifties. In fact, have lots of books I haven't got around to yet!

I think Halberstam specializes on Americana doesn't he?
He was a journalist who became well known upon publication of The Best and the Brightest, his study of the foreign policy advisors in the John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson administrations, who, in the full bloom of their technocratic prowess, proceeded to drive the USA straight into a ditch in Southeast Asia. Elsewhere his topics tended to be in other aspects of recent US history and current events.

The latest Jack Reacher book (No Plan B) came out a while back and as I've read them all up to this point I had to get it. Its even worse than the previous few since Lee child handed writing duties over to his brother. Unfortunately and in the interest of completeness, I'm compelled to read it.
