The GOT Book Club

Released as a film in April mate - Saint Nic Cage as the lead !

Reviews are generally good.
I will definitely check it out.

If you haven't read the book - as the saying goes - make sure you do before you watch the film.

John Williams only wrote three novels & all three are highly regarded. I haven't read the other two, but I'm keen to read Stoner

I came across a reference to Butcher's Crossing in a news paper about 10 years ago & that prompted me to buy a copy. It certainly packs a punch.

I read it about seven years ago after a recommendation from someone on here. As a result I must’ve put about half a dozen people onto it !

ellroy.webp

Big admirer of Ellroy's work - just reread this one. Love his mixture of fiction, fact, rumours and conspiracy theories. This one covers the period 1958-63, culminating in the Kennedy assassination.

Ellroy sums it up best in his preface:

“It’s time to demythologise an era and build a new myth from the gutter to the stars. It’s time to embrace bad men and the price they paid to secretly define their time.”

Recently read ‘they all love jack’ by Bruce Robinson. He directed the cult movie ‘Withnail and I’. It’s about Jack the Ripper, but it’s so much more than that. A scathing attack on the establishment at the time (which can be equally applied to modern times) and how jack got away with it. I’ll give you a heads up, his candidate isn’t part of the ‘royal conspiracy’, but a much more credible member of the upper classes.

It took him 9 years to research and write the book, and has been suppressed somewhat (understandable considering its content). Whether you agree with him or not, it’s a fantastic read, displaying a wry wit and dark humour throughout. 800+ pages but well worth the effort. One of the best historical books I’ve ever read.

Read this one a couple weeks back. It’s a good read. 4/5 for me too though I actually enjoyed the first half more than the second half
thought it was a bit 'dry' - was I reading Gatsby or something like that - until the writer character comes into play.
I found the Italian anarchist dad really well-drawn and relatable

Re-reading Dune.

Still love it
I started this and devoured it last month. The first is by far my favourite.

I've quickly worked through Messiah and Children of Dune and it definitely....evolves.

Can't work out if some of it is actually really good like the first book or if he got stuck up his own arse philosophizing instead of writing a decent narrative.

Never read or seen Lord of the Rings ?

On Audible just in middle of latest of the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Bit of a bonkers concept that I think he just about manages to get right even if it does have some complicated scientific premises that could get overly dull.

Still not convinced listening to books can give me the same experience of being gripped and not being able to put a good read down. Only couple times over last say three years on it have I been actively excited to put the headphones on and get back to it.

Just finished the mammoth Island of Fire by Jason D Marc’s. About the battle of Stalingrad and in particular, the battle for one of the large factory buildings. A really good read if you have an interest in the subject. Best to try and get a used book as a new hardback is very expensive.

Stoner is top drawer - really gifted writer. It's a quiet, meditative book, though - it's not too surprising to me that it quickly slipped out of mind after it was published.
I have a copy of butchers crossing that I might take with me on holiday to read - my reading has sucked this year tbh, too much gaming.
