The GOT Book Club

Just finished ‘Songbirds’, by Christy Lefteri. Good, but quite sad, followed by, ‘With The Old Breed’, E.B.Sledge. US Marines v Japanese, WW2, Peleliu and Okinawa. Very good book, describing some horrendous battles in detail.

Just started David Niven ‘The Moon’s A Balloon’. Hilarious so far, and much needed light relief after the last two reads.

Just finished this 🥲💔

Yeah, just superb. The characters were amazing. Cole & Rawlins friendship, Alfonsa, the old hacienda matriarch, all of them.

The part where they are heading to the jail on the flatbed truck completely blindsided me 😥

Need to pick the other 2 in the series up now!
I just finished this ,superb writing, a other GoT book club recommendation

Very nice LL!

What were your top 5?

Very nice LL!

What were your top 5?
Ooh tough one.
No particular order:

Cockroaches, Scholastique Mukasonga
A short but devastating memoir about the authors time growing up as a Tutsi in Rwanda in the 70' & 80's and her return to Rwanda after the genocide to locate the remains of her parents.

The Haar, David Sodergren

Probably the most fun horror I've ever read. I've been working my way through the rest of his catalogue since!

All The Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy

This has taken over Blood Meridian as my fav McCarthy novel since reading. Everything about it is great, but especially the characters.
I already have the other 2 books in the series and cant wait to get into them at some point next year.

Roadside Picnic, Arkady & Boris Strugatsky

A somewhat legendary piece of science fiction that has inspired countless others, from Tarkovski's movie 'Stalker' to Glukhovsky's 'Metro' series.

East of Eden, John Steinbeck

Every bit the masterpiece it's reputation suggests. Wish I'd read it sooner.

Ah very cool. Thank you!
I should definitely read East of Eden again. Read it as part of the canon in high school and am fairly sure lots of the allusions and allegories flew over my head.

Reading new Michael Connelly - Resurrection Walk. This is a joint Haller/Bosch book.

Connelly has introduced new protagonists along the way and now they all communicate quite regularly. It's become a bit cosy to be honest.

Having said that the narrative is so fluid and well constructed the story sucks you in and pretty soon the forces of law and order are getting a showing up.

I really cannot recommend this book more, historical fiction on the war in Sri Lanka, deservedly won awards, beautifully written, emotional and sad.
