The GOT Book Club

Completely forgot the best book of the 20th century on so many levels, " the name of the Rose". If you haven't read it and have a conglomerate of active cells in the cerebellum, do yourself a favour and check it out. The film with Sean Connery has an excellent sex scene

Think I'll add 'Blood Meridian' to my 'to read' list based on the comments on here.

I had a morbid stage of reading true life depress-a-thons like 'Treblinka' and 'Survival in the killing fields' (both an excellent read if you feel like a few hundred pages of utter despair) So may take a look at some fictional misery ;)

Morbid is the wrong word for McCarthys novels. He wants you to understand that this is what life was really like during this period of time in the American Mid West.

Just reading back over this thead, can't believe I missed it before my earlier post as I am a pyar bookworm! ;)

Actually read this after seeing the film (and the surprisingly not too terrible US remake)

Definitely adds another level to the shock factor and bleakness to the story. Especially how it shows Hakans true motives for being Eli's guardian!

Deffo recommend this.

I found that fact the most disturbing fact in the whole book. That Eli had groomed Hakan throughout the whole book and was actually inherently evil, rather than a lost and lonely child who happened to be a Vampire.

This is also true. Eli was a real cock blocker wasn't she/he? :p

BTW is it still paedophilia if the the child is a 300 year old vampire?:p

Would it surprise you that I read it many years ago when I was starting out on my one man quest of misery !

Ps - may I recommend - Hell Bound a Heart aka Hell Raiser by Clive Barker ! .

Another great read. By a scouser as well ;)

Although some of Barkers stories can be very metaphysical and a pain to get your head around if your imagination isn't as twisted as his.
I tried one of his books called 'Everville' in which there is a protagonist called 'Tesla' who is a 6ft musclebound, blonde lesbian with the soul of a hispanic half man/half ape called 'Ramon' living inside her head.

Her character makes the most sense in the book!

Would it surprise you to know that Mr Barker is a rampant Batty Boy, which actually comes out in most of his books - think Pin Head in the film Hell Raiser !

Yeah, i knew that. He does have a gay theme running through a lot of his books. Especially the Books of blood stories. Even the straight male characters are described with an almost homoerotic detail.

Also, I always liked the fact that Pinhead and co were not supposed to be Evil in the book. Just pervert, sado-masochists from hell doing what they thought the person who opened the box desired.
Difficult to get that into a popcorn horror film I suppose.

Also, I've not read it myself, but wasn't Candyman originally set in the old high rise flats in Fazak (in the book)?

I always thought Candyman was set in Toxteth - the old Heyesmoor Heights on the corner of Lodge Lane and Ullet Rd - Barker being an Allerton lad ?. ( I've also been told that his inspiration for the Candyman character came from Purple Aki, who was very active when he was a young lad in South Liverpool - bogey man, urban myth etc ).

This is a must read too - Tom Bowers an investigative journalist looks at corruption within the English game ( not match fixing ). His findings truly are shocking. He openly presents evidence of corruption against George Graham, Terry Venables, Ken Bates etc. Exposes the truth behind the new Wembley fiasco . Compelling as it is shocking . He's never been sued by anyone he names in this book which speaks volumes and I'm surprised that this book didn't cause real trouble when it was published.
