The GOT Book Club

Just finished 1491 - history of the Americas before Columbus. Very interesting, especially about the 'civilisation' of North and South America.

Starting on the sequel 1493 when I've had a breather.

*Adds to to-read list

Good book mate, read that a while ago. I'd recommend the open veins of Latin America, really interesting book on the exploitation of South Americas resources from the conquistadors to modern day by Eduardo Galeano. Also Howard Zinn's A people's history of the United States in the same kind of ballpark as 1491

Reading Open Veins at the moment. Enjoyable and interesting read so far.

I only read books written by men with beards. This is good.

Really enjoyed this, I mentioned it a while back in the thread. The next installment is just as good. I'm looking forward to the third one as much as the next GOT book.

I'm just onto the final book of Robin Hobb's farseer trilogy which I would also recommend.

I dont think she has a beard though.

Just finished this - Coming Up For Air : George Orwell.

Written before Animal Farm and 1984, so not as dark and actually quite humorous for Orwell. Story of a middle aged man with a dead end job pre the First World War. Decides to return to the village in the countryside he grew up in to retrace his youth. I really enjoyed it and you can see hints of his other books to come in it.

Really enjoyed this as a read. Its had mixed reviews but i thought it was excellent. A little more 'mainstream' than some of his other works re Ubik and Valis but all in all worth the week or so it took to read.

You're right it's a good book and it's been turned into a tv series that comes out this year in the States.
