Martin McCartland..Fifty Dead Men Walking.
Auto biog of a Northern Ireland man who turned against the IRA and became an informer to Special Branch.
I worked in Belfast at the height of the troubles, and I can recall some of the horrific crimes committed on both sides.
Superb book..well written.
Good book !

Just finished this - Habour by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

It's a good book, but the problem is that his first book - Let the Right One In, is such an outstanding book that it would appear that he's never going to be able to match it no matter what he writes .

One for all the many fans of the Wire - Homicide by David Simon. The Police side of things in the Wire is based on this book as are a lot of the Detectives in it too. Be warned its very procedural and quite a hard read as a result of this.

Just started his other book, which the drug dealers in the Wire are based on - The Corner.

An excellent book written from the point of view of the ordinary soldier in the Great War : from patriotism to injury and return to an uncaring Blighty.
The author, Henry Williamson, served in the War and wrote a series consisting of 15 books called The Chronicles of Ancient Sunlight. It details a slightly disguised story of himself from birth in the 1890's to the 1960´s encompassing both wars. The disillusionment he felt after the First World War led him to encompass Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists.
I'd highly recommend the books set in the War.

Just finished this. A great read, not as dry as the previous book by the same author - Homicide. Looks at life through the eyes of the crack ravaged inner city black community in Baltimore. The inspiration for a lot of the black charcaters in the Wire come from this book, particularily " Bubba ". This book makes you realise that the war on drugs will never be won and another way needs to be found to deal with the problem.

Blackwater: The Rise of the World's most powerful mercenary army - Jeremy Scahill.

This has been slightly overtaken by events; Blackwater no longer exists as the same organisation, and last week four former employees were convicted for the 2007 Nisour Square shootings. Nevertheless, this remains a compelling investigation into the growth and rebranding of mercenary forces, the land grab for lucrative private contracting in Iraq at the expense of the US tax payer, and the troubling close relationship between an administration on a war footing and a right wing corporate army who profit (well) from continuous conflict. Fascinating and often unsettling read.

Going on my list, cheers mate.

If anyone is into historical fiction I'd recommend the Conqueror Series by Conn Iggulden. It's all about the start of the Mongol Empire. Brilliant stuff IMO

Some of the best books I've read. Fascinating stuff. The emperor books about Caesar and Rome are great too

Just finished "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls", wow... if you like films you gotta read this. It starts off in the late 60's and goes up to the end of the 70's and explains how Hollywood came from producing Historical Epics or Doris Day, Cary Grant pap to the likes of Taxi Driver, Godfather, the Exorcist, Scarface etc type films,
It basically tears apart everyone who was anyone in Hollywood then, Coppola, Scorsese, Lucas, Friedkin, Hopper, De Palma, Spielberg, etc.. plus actors get it to. The orgies, drugs, paranoia, megalomania, affairs, craziness, you name it its in here... no one comes out unscathed, absolutely brilliant and doesn't get sucked into the Hollywood bullshit propaganda machine.

Thanks for the recommendation , just finished it. Very good read, however I would say that you need a working knowledge of Hollywod directors, producers and actors from the late 60's and the 70's to be able to understand it.
