Basically it's about a top SS wafflen SS officer who's brigade escape the Russians after World War Two - it leads to Him and his few comrades fighting in the French Foriegn Leigion in the old Vietnam cong now Vietnam - The main man told his story to a journalist hence the novel of a great book - he offered advice to the USA in the Veitnam war,but was ignored as he knew the outcome of sending inexperienced boys into the terrain he had been successful in - he stayed, and lived abroad when the Foriegn legion was disbanded - it would make a great movie, but as I stated to controversial to glorify the remarkable fighting unit of the Waffen SS
A original copy of this book is sky high!
It's a great story too, brilliantly written!

I think I read this many a year ago......Very good read if it's the same one I'm thinking of (By the sounds of it, it is!)

It originally came out in the 1980's in paperback, my late father past it around his massive workplace - they all raved about it - my older Brother told me to read it - it's a quality read if your into that sort of thing it would make a blockbuster of a movie - but!!!!! Glorying Waffen SS who were no more than an elite fighting army of their era - the SS unit had meant divisions not all of them were butchers, but are perceived to be so!
It's a fact that Waffen SS joined the Foriegn Legion in this era to save their lives!

Will be the same one then - I read it early-mid 90's I think. Picked it up along with a couple Sven Hassel ones.

I think there is a short series , but the original first one is the one based on the main character is I believe the best one

Just finished this - the book that the film is based on.

Tbh I was a bit disappointed. Its one of the rarities where the film is better than the book. Then film brings the possession of the little girl much more to life than the book .

Would make a good holiday read.

Its a very good read you will enjoy it, from the good introduction from the author to his interview with the alias of the main character, its a very very good story sad it was never made into a Movie as it would have been a blockbuster - critics have tried to scorn it, as if he was there , but it is proven the Waffen SS were in that area fighting for the French Foreign Legion, but its truly believable with a great story! read, and let me know what you think - the original copy is on e bay for £59.00 it was £170 when eBay was booming even the transcripts of the book were being sold which you could download, but you cannot beat a good book!
when He died, it was reprinted hence you can get it easily now - hope you enjoy it!
I still look on Car boots for the original for the last ten years not a chance!

Only just started first few chapters but the author builds up the background with the intensity and atmosphere of the war zone thanks for the info on this book
