Gareth Murphy - Cowboys And Indies: The epic history of the record industry.

Often fascinating look at the machinery behind the art. Looking at the hardware innovations that caused seismic shifts, the cyclical growth patterns of labels and the corporate shenanigans that take over once they reach a certain size, and the 'record men' who, whether in pursuit of good tunes or filthy lucre drove over a century of music culture.
US and UK centric, with a minor diversion into Jamaica through Island, I'd have liked a slightly more global perspective and there are a few blind spots, notably in the compacted final chapters, it's nevertheless an interesting insight into the music business.

The bleakness didn't put me off mate, I mean they are grim no doubt and I could see it would be a bit much for many, but it was the narrative, it just didn't grab me in the first two, but the third one I found really compelling. Will definitely complete the 4.
I read the first 2 a few years back and found them unpleasant and tainted with corruption. There is no saving grace in either book. I put them away and felt lessened by reading them.
Don't think I will read the last two

Yeah, I had similar reservations, but got a lot more from the third one.
Have you read any Thomas Harris books, Fatherland, The Ghost etc
I'm reading the 3rd and final book in his series about the life of Cicero
First two were excellent, exciting but thoughtful
The last one is a bit of a let down as everyone knows how it ends

Robert Harris even? ;)
Yeah, I read Fatherland, long time ago mind you. I enjoyed it and watching Man In The High Castle has reminded me of those themes. Not read anything else but I quite liked the film version of The Ghost. Recommended?

Touché Robert my stupidity lol
The book of the ghost is better than the film
Selling Hitler is really excellent and try Imperium the 1st of the Cicero books

Alan Moore, in his prime, a genius. Here's ten of his works.

Had a short holiday so tackled Proust vol2 - within a budding grove. V immersive read - quite tough as it's massively introspective so you can get lost in the narrator's thoughts, but ok if you get a clear run at it.
Half way with it and prob be hard to finish it off, picking it up here and there for 20 mins won't really work.

Started reading American Gods and it has been a great read so far, I'm about half the way through. I'm unsure whether I want to start the Wheel Of Time series after or the Discworld novels.
