The GOT Book Club

Most recently have got through;

Fear and Loathing... by Hunter S Thompson, decent but really just a tale of excess that was probably more relevant when it came out. 4/10.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, first time I've ever read an entire book in a day, oddly captivating and really enjoyed his writing style. 8/10

Walking the Nile by Levison Wood, great adventure and I'm a sucker for an adventure book, first 2/3rds brilliant but the last third felt a bit rushed. 7/10.

Currently only got a few chapters to go with A Thousand Splendid Suns, which has been a great read thus far.

Got to disagree on that.
The places or things that happened may be excessive to some but, it shouldn't be an obstacle to block the understanding of the 'journey'.
Really enjoyed it but, did read it years ago (so the relevance part might be apt). Things like that still go on today though, so still quite a story?

I'm about two thirds of the way through the new Bernard Cornwall book called Flame Bearer which is the tenth book in the Warrior Chronicles. Just brilliant, nobody does historical fiction like Bernard Cornwall. After I've finished that i'm going to start the new Quarry book by Max Allen Collins called Quarry in the Black. I'd recommend this series of books for anyone interested in a great pulp novels, I think it's actually due to be made into a tv series at some point but I doubt they will be able to capture the brilliance of the books.

I just finished books 8 and 9 of the warrior chronicles , is book 10 out in paperback yet? Have you tried Simon Scarrow? his Legionaire books are amazing, I love his stuff as much as I do Cornwall's

No mate, the tenth book only arrived in the stores a few days back so your probably looking at April for the paperback to be published. I do like Scarrow's work but not as much as either Cornwell or Conn Iggulden (who's one of the most underrated writers about imo).

Ahh OK, I think I can wait until April, did you watch the TV adaptation (The Last Kindgom) that was on BBC2.....

I have read Iggulden's first Gengis Khan Book, enjoyed it but never picked up the second for some reason

The Warrior of Rome series by Harry Sidebottom and the Attila books by William Napier were also good reads

Anyone read either of these yet?

Good/ok/steer clear of???

Just finished Murder Machine, it's about the Roy De Meo Mafia crew in Broolyn in the 70s and 80s, their meant to have butchered over 200 people, scary stuff if true, it would make a great film.

have that book at home and i have actually read it a couple of times over the years.very good book.mad lads they were.killing someone was the same as having a sandwich.ya agreed would make a good film with the right actors.

I read quite a lot over a few genres - nothing too heavy but there are a few authors worth a read -
Lee Child - all of his books are good. Can easily read them in a day because they grip you. Jack Reacher is a great character and for thiose who have only seen the film - the exact antithesis of the character displayed by Tom Cruise.
Vince Flynn - sadly deceased but there is someone helping to carry on his Mitch Rapp series, same sort of books as Lee Child.
Mario Puzo - most famous for The Godfather but The Borgias is well worth a read too as is Omerta.
David Baldacci - again done lots of books but I prefer the Will Robie and John Puller series'
John Grisham - earlier stuff is better but still very good legal thrillers whichever book you pick up.
Simon Scarrow - Roman history predominantly although has done a very good series on Wellington and Napoleon too.
Ken Follett - Best known for Pillars of the earth but again other books well worth a go too.
Scott Mariani - thriller/adventure folllowing character Ben Hope is good as is Steve Berry and his Cotton Malone series.
Any Bernard Cornwall and Conn Iggulden stuff is usually good too.

This, this, and more this.

Just finished Cryptonomicon - Neil Stephenson, The Rising Sun: The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire 1936-1945 - John Toland, The Rise of Rome - Anthony Everitt and Ubik - The incomparable Philip K. Dick.

Cryptonomicon was ace. Really enjoyed it, even if it did get a little uncomfortably libertarian in bits - it was well done enough that I could easily see if being characterization rather than demagoguery.

The Rising Sun: Etc was dense. Fascinating from a historical perspective. It was written about 25 years after the war, so a lot was still very fresh in the memory, but it was no easy read. Like a textbook of sorts.

The Rise of Rome went too far in the other direction. Far too short for a history covering so much ground. The tone of it was very light and conversational. Overall a good starter history, but not enough meat.

Ubik was amazing. Read it if you haven't. Especially if you like speculative fiction. It takes a bit to wrap your head around, but is utterly delightful when you do.

Currently reading The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco. But just started last night, so no real thoughts yet.
