Messi, comfortably so

Maradona the only other player with similar talent level but his career doesn’t come close to Messis in terms of consistency and neither a World Cup or a title at Napoli is a sufficient counter to that fact.

Messi might not have had that consistency if he played in the Maradona era. Yes Maradona lacked the discipline Messi had but he also suffered a number of serious injuries due the physicality of the challenges that were allowed at that time.

Not a fan of Linekar but he made a great point when describing the goal Maradona scored against England. The quality of the pitches in those days. If you watch the goal closely you see it bobbling along yet he is still able to run at full speed weaving between 4 or 5 players

Below God tier is a huge gaggle of players
In my time watching, the god tier is:

Maradona
Romario
Zidane

Below god-tier, but only half a notch below you can put a whole host of incredible players, many of whom have been mentioned already

but then how does the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Ibrahimovic, Figo, Zola, Henry, Bergkamp, Rooney, Le Tissier, Kaka etc barely get a sniff. All of them great, great players in any sense of the word.

Maradona for me. He is the most naturally gifted footballer I've ever seen. If you add in the fact that he was a charismatic leader and master of the dark arts on the pitch, and a complete enigma off the pitch, then you have the full package.

I'll also give noteworthy mentions to Ronaldhino and Zidane as naturally gifted attackers, Maldini for turning defending into an art form, and Neville Southall for being a mad genius between the sticks.

Not sure how being a coke guzzling wrongun off the pitch adds to ones legacy as the best ever. It’s quite clearly one of the main things that made Maradonas career not be as good as it should have been.
