Not a patch on Ian Salisbury.

Corks Denis Dinny Allen in an Irish sporting context was unique. In soccer he won an FAI Cup winners medal with Cork Hibernians in 1973.

In GAA he won a Munster hurling championship medal with Cork in 1975, and in gaelic football he won an all Ireland medal with Cork in 1989.

He should have been in Corks 1973 all Ireland winning team in gaelic football, but the county board banned him from the panel just because he wanted to play soccer!

Finally in 1989 after toiling for many years with Cork and achieving very little success, he finally won that elusive all Ireland medal, when in his final ever game he captained Cork to it's first all Ireland title in gaelic football since 1973.

So yeah Dinnys story is proof that fairytales can come true alright!

Yes theres tales of remarkable courage and heroism far from the adulation of the sporting arena that allow a glimpse of the true character and decency of a person. Gino Bartali is one that jumps to mind easily.
Along those lines: Jack Twyman

Sad to see Roger Federer retire, who for me was the greatest sportsperson of my generation. Carried himself well both on and off the court and seems like a genuinely decent guy.

What’s everyone else say?

No fighting pls

Also big fan of Rog...beautiful beautiful tennis. Djoko & Nadal matches are a little dull to watch, despite their now surpassing Fed's records.

From other sports i loved watching Michael Johnson...that incredible running style, and those obscene times! Usain bested him now, but i still got a soft spot for MJ.

Maradona for footie...even as a spoilt German with so many greats, and even in the age of Messi/Ronaldo etc...Maradona is still from another planet.

Those three, i reckon: Federer, Johnson, Maradona. Überlegends.

Any excuse to post:

Before my time, but Stanley Matthews deserves a mention, surely? Incredible career, and a name that was recognised by kids long after he'd finished playing.

Sugar Ray Robinson is widely regarded to be the best pound for pound boxer ever.
