The Mccarthy risk

so basically if everton bid 10 mil, derby have to say to liverpool, 10 mil bid from everton your turn?

We bid 10mil....they ask pool to match it.....pool say no we talk to hughes.

Pool say yes and match it then they talk to hughes.....then its a bit ambiguous as they are able to negotiate the deal and we may be made to wait....however any player will want to weigh up options so likely it would just mean the agent doing something on the sly with us.

Or we bid 30 mill for him liverpool say no then we cancel the bid and put in a more reasonable one and liverpool don't need to be told sweet FA. Or they match it and we laught at them as they blow there budget on some random lad haha.

McCarthy was less of a risk for a few reasons. He had a couple of years in the Premier League. Our manager had signed him before and had made him an important part of his team at Wigan so was familiar with his strengths, weaknesses and character. Hughes is also a few years younger than McCarthy currently.

Hughes looks an excellent prospect - I might get shouted down for this, but he reminds me in some ways of Gareth Barry when he was a youngster. Spending £10m on a young kid with no top level experience is just not a gamble a club with our resources can afford to take though.

I disagree with this. He really is a player - comfortable on the ball, good vision, great technique and works hard for the team. He'll only get better and if he costs us £10m now then as long as he stays injury free (injuries are a risk with any signing) then his value would only increase. With him McCarthy and Barkley we'd have a fantastic midfield to build around for several years.

Some players like Walcott, Bale and Ramsey when they were younger are the sort of players Everton need to be "gambling" on. I know there are plenty of young players who are hyped up and never reach their full potential but this lad has everything. He'd be perfect for us and Martinez.

You need the balance of young players coming through together with seasoned PL campaigners.

I would suggest that with Stones, Barkley, Oviedo, Lukaku and Deulofeu, we have as many youngsters as we can handle right now. The priority must be to get some seasoned campaigners in their prime who can come in a do a job for us straight away.

Stones doesn't play regularly and Lukaku and Deulofeu most likely won't be here beyond this season. We need to look long term with everything we do

I think the risk is weighed up by the contribution that the young lad can make for the team. If you sign Hughes for 5-10 million and he can come in and play an important role in the team then he is 'worth the risk' so to speak. This way he can develop and improve the way McCarthy and Barkley can be allowed to and as such, build a cornerstone for the team for the next 10 years.

However if he needs time to bed in, get used to the step up in class every week and if he needs a arm around him all the time then he is not worth risking a lot of money (for us) on. Ultimatly, if we spend money these days, we need someone who can go straight into the squad and play a part.

Then again forget all of the above, we could just sign players on a whim and hope they come good. Hughes could be a world beater by the age 24, or he could be another Wickham/Sinclair/insert young english lad here. The only way you will ever know is to buy and play him.
