We are VERY near to ordering the worksurface. That was supposed to be a last Friday thing before she downed tools to babysit the grandchild at 11am despite that being a 6pm plan because the daughter was "going out" to a pub an hour's drive away).

I drew a very technical diagram of the sink cut out we need as she's decided to take up their offer of a cut out service (forty quid to cut three sides of a rectangle and rout a few grooves... and at the risk of sounding like Yosser Hughes ... I can do that ... gimme the forty quid!!)

I asked her to triple check my measurements so she drew something else that will utterly confuse anybody who its presented to. She said they just wanted the size of the sink ... I asked inside or outside dimension? Its a butler sink so we want overhang. We also want a specific overhang either side if it. She looked at me like a dog when you try to teach it poker. Actually it was more like a cat ... dogs don't show contempt, they show trust. God knows which diagram she'll send. Its not my problem now.

The extractor fan has been "in the post" for three weeks now and she hasn't got around to following that up.

In other news ... things are looking more gooderer on the progress front. I've been slapping the emulsion on today ... which means that I can soon finish the floor and start shoving the piano away from my speakers and regain territory lost in the workshop.

She bought some really cheap white emulsion for the ceiling from B&Q ... so thats more work for me to save her a tenner as it'll be 5 extra coats I'll have to do - i don't want to even think about how long it will be if i make her do it.

Its full of lumps too.

Not now - but it will be if it's wrong

This is now your problem

You have my sympathy.

The wave I've been waiting to surf is here. The crest is just peaking and I'm lifting a foot into the board....

The floor is down! The wood is largely out of the way and there's even some left over for other projects - cupboards, doors and trim. It wasn't without its frustrations though. The last metre of flooring is where the stove will go. I've contacted about 8 Hetas jobs for the boys chimney installers about fitting a stove. All but 2 don't bother replying or following up. One of them, the son in law of a deceased great mate is not offering any favours by being 2 grand dearer than the going rate. Of course he will only install a stove he supplies and his stoves start at 2 grand but can't say about stock.

I ordered my own stove yesterday (1 grand) and contacted the other company asking when they could start. "If I'm lucky, December" was the reply. So I ask - which part of December? No reply.

I also cut the enormous granite slab that came out of the kitchen to use as a hearth. I was about yo sell all that granite for £300 when it dawned on me that I'd end up paying more than that for a poxy square metre of hearth so I pulled the sale (turns out I would have been ...£450 to supply granite half as thick).

Before cutting- just how big a piece do I need for Hetas regulations? I get on the phone:
Installer - ask the stove manufacturer
Manufacturer - consult your installer
Hetas - its building regs
Building regs - stove plus 150mm either side .. so thats 900mm wide I need to cut, 300mm in front ... but at least an area of 840 x 840 .... wtf do they actually mean so if its 900mm wide exceeding the 840x850 I don't have to go 300mm in front? Who writes this stuff? I'll do it 900mm x 840 and f it. The Hetas installer doesn't know!

110v disk cutter in the car porch ... Jack up the vertical slab for clearance, support with wooden blocks, clamp a straight edge where i want to cut, hose in a clamp with a gentle misting to reduce dust and make me nicely damp. Cut away. Nervous stuff. Insert a wedge when nearly through so the slab doesn't collapse and pinch the cutter wheel. Job done relatively simply.

Straighten cut edge using a small diamond grinder, metre rule edge and chalk to mark the high spots. Over to belt sander for polishing .... three hours of sanding later I have a hearth with chamfered edges sitting plush among the oak floor. I hope the satisfaction lasts longer than the pain in my back from lugging this thing around.

the peak of the wave arrives- once varnished_hard waxed I can use the room, fill it with the furniture that has been stacked and in the way ... its down, its ready for the paint brush and roller today TODAY!! What's that? A dentist appiintment this morning in one town - a covid vaccine thus afternoon in another town? That's the day gone then. Tomorrow will be written off feeling lousy with the vaccine. Sunday will be baby visiting.

The wave passes leaving nothing more than a dead jellyfish on my bald head just for laughs.

If you can do that, you can make a Roast yourself! Great Job!!

try 'red hot'...

So having driven 9 miles to the dentist to fit my crown at last (the 5th visit) he tells me it hasn't turned up in the post. Surely this is something a phone call could be useful for.

Anyway, it gives me time to hard wax the floor, which I'm doing in my undercrackers, because its hot and I can't be arsed fighting my way past all the furniture to get shorts, when the doorbell goes.

So I'm hiding behind the door and there's the chirpiest delivery driver I've ever met, telling me all about how the cooker hood he's delivering connects to your phone, while Brian my 85 year old neighbour grins at me from behind.

The hood the wife ordered of course ... which has been, what, three weeks in the post from Germany because no middleman in the UK stocks anything anymore, is too big for the wall. It has to be min 65cm from the cooker, add its 47cm height and we have to bore a 5" hole through the wall at the height of the concrete gutter. Oh marvellous. And I've just crushed up the packaging because there is literally no space left in the house
