I had to do deliveries ( murder at Christmas carting 15 Ib + Turkeys about but the tips were good) on a Granville open all hours style bike and other general shop work, like peeling the boiled beetroot, hand cranking the sausage machine...with a kids small quick hands I was a demon sausage linker...washing out the van, inside and out.
When the match finished I'd, leg back for the clean up, washing trays, scrubbing the big butchers block bench out the back for a 6pm finish.
Any thing that was getting to its 'use by' would go 2 doors down to Reece's and we'd get bread, cream cakes in return.
Different world.
I remember a lad I was at school with used to lug boxes around for the fruit shop over the road from the Harlech Castle. It's funny how the world has changed,kids now wouldn't do that type of work. I used to box at the Golden Gloves and a mate there used to work in a butchers turning out hundreds of sausages on a hand crank machine every day before training,ended up winning an Olympic medal though so it must have helped.
