The Oldies Thread

Firstly Andy Capp, was a fixture in the Mirror for decades.

Secondly, the buzzer in the lounge to get 'waitress service' which usually meant somebody's Nana or Aunty in a dinner lady style polyester pinny.

One Friday night, THREE of us were in the Holt, which was a reverse L shaped pub with the lounge at the bottom of the long arm of the L

We'd press the buzzer, order FOUR pints,
Which eventually... quite quickly really...would arrive.
give the Arl Doll a pound note,
back to the till, then back with the change.
4 empty glasses on the table.
(We'd take turns double drinking)
FOUR pints please etc.
After half an hour / 3 goes of this we got fed up with that game / felt sorry for her and had decided to shoot into town.
Do we gave her the pound note and said keep the change, which was about 9 shillings.

Halogen Days as somebody once said on here

I post this here as it is only a person of a certain vintage who will comprehend what I mean. I my subject for tonight is that democracy is dead. I prefix this with the admission that I have had a few whiskeys. That aside I return to my main theme, democracy is dead, the idea of democracy is great almost as great as communism but it suffers the same problems as communism in that it doesn’t take into consideration human nature. We will set communism aside for the moment and look at democracy, in the purest sense a government of the people by the people for the people is a purest utopia. The problem is that it involves people, in a fledgling democracy people get to vote for the people they want, in an aging democracy they get to vote for the least worst. We, my friends, are in the least worst scenario, we no longer have the choice of voting for the people we want but we vote to keep the people we don’t want. We in Northern Ireland have been doing this for years, now this type of democracy has become the norm for the British Parliament. You, like ourselves, no longer choose the government you want but you now vote for the government you don’t want. When democracy offers you a choice between the lesser of two evils then you know that democracy has run its course. When political system offers us a choice between the likes of Boris Johnston, Liz Truss and Kier Starmer then you should realise that it is broken beyond repair. We don’t need different politicians we need a different political system.

Too much repetition. Democracy, democracy, democracy and communism, communism, communism.

Plato always considered Democracy to be the least worst form of governance. It is wide open to abuse as we see today, but it was never real, it was always assumed or projected.

Plato: “Democracy, which is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder, and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequal's alike.” “Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty.

As has been said before, we get the politicians we deserve ...
