Given his limitations Defoe is an interesting choice for Sunderland on a high wage.

Yet the concern is he no longer has that extra burst he requires to succeed at this level, even though he scored 11 goals in 16 matches for Toronto, and that Sunderland have spent too long watching videos of Defoe scoring goals for Tottenham five years ago. He was peripheral towards the end at White Hart Lane and his last truly prolific season was in 2009-10. Defoe scored 18 league goals that year but only 22 across the following three seasons.

Now he is joining a side of restricted creativity. Too many of Sunderland’s midfielders are functional scurriers and it is not obvious what they gained from selling Stéphane Sessègnon to West Bromwich Albion last season. Poyet must extract more from Johnson, Emmanuele Giaccherini and Ricky Álvarez, who has struggled for fitness since joining on loan from Internazionale last summer.

A prosaic 4-3-3 formation does not help and Poyet could do with a rethink. Defoe is a straightforward No9 who likes to play through the middle. His size means he is not suited to playing on his own, he will not play with his back to goal or as a wide forward and Sunderland must work out how to play him into areas where he is effective.

Manchester City are considering a move for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez despite closing in on a £30million deal for Wilfried Bony. City are wary of interest from Liverpool and Tottenham – who are both monitoring Rodriguez closely – and are keen to beat them to his signature. Rodriguez has a significant new contract offer on the table from Southampton, who are urging him to extend his stay on the south coast.

Doubt even City need More than four strikers so if they do sign Rodriguez would expect one of Jovetic or Dzecko to leave.

Tyrone mings isn't doing his possible transfer to the Premier league any harm in the cup game against the saints.

He looks a decent player, big lad as well.

Anyone who watches German football seen anything of Thorgan Hazard playing for Gladbach?

According to the Belgium journo Terreur he wants regular game time and stability vs loan moves so Chelsea are considering selling him.

Not seen him play ever. But read a little about him and he seems well thought of but nowhere near his bro.

If we had not got Rom, Bony is the player I would have liked to have signed but no way could we have afforded that salary.

Wilfried Bony will earn a £20,000-a-game bonus on top of his basic £100,000-a-week salary at Manchester City after completing his £25m transfer from Swansea City.

The 26-year-old striker secured the appearance fee after being denied a higher salary by the champions, who will have to pay up to an extra £3m to Swansea in add-ons. The full amount will be due if Bony features in a certain percentage of matches and the club win every domestic honour plus the European Cup.
