Spanish influenza infected a third of the world's population, leaving millions dead. Just as during the covid-19 pandemic, schools, theatres, bars, saloons, and restaurants were closed, and citizens were asked to wear masks to prevent the spread of further infection. Much like today, the mask mandates generated controversy, rebellion, and backlash, even as millions died of the respiratory virus. Mask refusers were called 'slackers' and faced fines and jail time for refusing to wear masks.
