Well this is where I differ I'm afraid. After going through it, I actually don't think it is a disaster. Forget about player performance and managerial performance (that is where you will find the disaster). I am talking about our financial performance linked to transfer business which is what we being criticised in the media for. This really.
I don’t understand the desire to go through every transfer in detail when we all know this. There’s no making it seem better, it’s an embarrassment. We’re top 5 in terms of net spend but have just finished bottom 5 in the league.

Vlasic, Onyekuru, Gueye, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Gueye, Gray, Digne, Kean, Lookman all have or will yeild significant profit. I don't have the loan fees for Sandro, but I wouldn't be surprised if we turned profit on him too... Most of the other signings will just about hold their value (some will or could also give a profit like Pickford).
The biggest single player losses are from players who were or have been crippled by injuries or 'unknown' factors in the case of our record signing.
At the time of signing each of the players above, which ones were we (as a fan base) collectively against because it seemed we paying over the odds in the market at the time?
I don't know if we did, given the market at the time. The one I always had most problem with was Bolasie. Probably bought in a desperate attempt to keep Rom happy when he was clearly off.A lot of these ‘ruined by injury’ players simply weren’t that good to begin with and we grossly over paid for them.
To write it off as bad luck is rosy retrospection.
Isn’t it the £20m odd players that have cost us though? There’s been too many in that range given huge contracts that basically made them unsellable resulting in bosman’s or losses.I don't know if we did, given the market at the time. The one I always had most problem with was Bolasie. Probably bought in a desperate attempt to keep Rom happy when he was clearly off.
I just looked at the same period for the RS and basically them selling Coutinho and Sakho for a combined 150million kickstarted their current period of success . With the money, they bought Van Dijk, Robertson and Salah. They have routinely bought players for 40million plus since then (15 times in total in their history)
In contrast we have only ever bought 3 players for over 30 million in our history. Rom (sold for double) Richy (now worth double) and Iceland. So actually, perhaps the root cause of our problems lies in the fact that we haven't spent enough. We have routinely targeted the tier of player below the tier we need to target to take us to the next level.
We aren't the only ones to spend big money on ineffective players. See below. These are the amount of times a team has paid 30m plus for a player and examples of the big money flops. My point is that we aren't the only ones to blow big money. Every club has done it. We have spent what we have spent just to keep up and we have had one really bad season due to the FSW plus we are building a new stadium. I'm not having the media and other fans making out like we are a massive basket case. We are not in context of everything else. COYB!!!!
Team, players bought 30m+ (main flops)
Man U 25 (Maguire 85m but take your pick of flops)
Man C 23 (Mendy 50m)
Chelsea 23 (Lukaku 100m or Kepa 72m)
Liverpool 15 (Benteke 41m)
Arsenal 12 (Pepe 72m)
Spurs 3 (Ndombele 63m)
West Ham 3 (Haller 45m)
Leicester 3 (Perez 30m)
Everton 3 (Iceland 44m)
Newcastle 2 (Joelinton 39m)
Villa 2 (Buendia 34m)
Wolves 2 (Silva 36m)
We threw around cash like @chicoazul in the Lisbon, spent half of it on attacking midfielders with grass ligaments, and the other half on firing managers. Can someone run this through Blinkist and post the summary pls.
Ha! Went about answering your question the same way!!Yannick Bolasie – £25m (August 2016) released for free
Morgan Schneiderlin – £24m (January 2017) sold for £1.7m was it?
Jordan Pickford – £25m (June 2017) should be worth more but ??
Davy Klaassen – £23.6m (June 2017) sold for £12m iirc
Michael Keane – £25m (July 2017) current value? Break even if we are v lucky.
Cenk Tosun – £27m (January 2018) released.
Theo Walcott – £20m (January 2018) loaned / released and contributed to his wages
Yerry Mina – £27.1m (August 2018) currently value? Likely loss.
Andre Gomes – £22m (June 2019) current value? Likely loss
Jean-Philippe Gbamin – £25m (August 2019) current value? Significant loss.
Moise Kean – £25.1m (August 2019) break even or small profit depending where you read
Alex Iwobi – £28m (August 2019) £28m ?
Allan – £21m (September 2020) current value? Defo loss given his age.
Abdoulaye Doucoure – £20m (September 2020) current value? Break even if lucky
Ben Godfrey – £25m (October 2020) current value, less than £25m I’d estimate.
And that excludes whatever we undoubtably gave James to buy out the remainder of his Real contract which went straight down the plug hole…..
We might not spend £30m+ on players but we’ve sure bought some ***** for over £20m
Where do we sit in the standings for players in that price range I wonder?
