The winter of Englands discontent?

Well let me use an example for you- Italy.

They barely qualified for the world cup in 2006- they got in by beating Australia in a play off. They went on to win the world cup. Yes we didnt deserve to get in, but, we are still England and I am English- who knows what would have happened if we had got there.

the same thing that happens every time, the hunger, fight and determination is lacking and so england get found out.

its a management thing, hoddle had the balls to drop fans and tabloid favourite gascoigne.

mcclaren - wank
sven - [Poor language removed]
keegan - inept
hoddle - chased out for non football reasons
venables - walked due to non football reasons
taylor - [Poor language removed]
robson - the last great england manager, 1990

17 years since a really good manager was at the helm.

we need a manager that will dictate, not be dictated too. a strong character that is prepared to lead, and can invoke confidence and passion.

mcclaren is like beige paint - he is bland. his football is bland.

its time to change, and to start moving in the right direction instead of appointing puppet yes men with no clue.

Really? Tell you what if you can walk on to a pitch and play a first time ball into a striker to score then great.

If you can have the balls to stand in the face of fury and accept criticism and bounce back, then great.

But maybe it takes more than arrogance to be a **** on this board?

Suits you are so wrong, Beckham made a difference, I cannot recall SWP making one cross, can you? Anyway as it turns out this is Beckhams last game for England or should be and for others as well.

Crouch actually took his goal very well and he was the only attacker who was troubling their defenders, so give him some credit. He and Campbell were our best players over the 90.

The worst players IMO and I do not want ever to see them come near an Everton shirt are Bridge, Cole and Lampard.
They sucked, is it a coincidence that when Lampard plays it some how falls apart?

Defoe was a waste of space and TBH Bent was hardly any better. I kept thinking to myself and you may all call me for it, but if Vic had opted for England and he had been on the bench waiting to come on!!!!!!!!! Look at what he throws into his game for Everton.

thought swp stood out quite well, better performance in a side that was poor - perhaps, but he made a few crosses, got to the byline (becksy didnt once) he tried to link up and take players on. he needed to do better with his shot.

hindsight is wonderful, lampard shouldnt have played, midfield four of cole barry gerrard swp would have been fine, two strikers, smith and defoe would have pressed and harried the croat defence better than 50 pence head crouch did.

barry holding in a midfield five didnt solve the lampard gerrard problem, gerrard kept dropping back to try to mop up and then distribute - he was needed further up the field.

england finish level on points with israel. that says it all.

Beckham isn't a winger, you may have noticed that Joe Cole didn't get to the byline either.

But Beckham did what SWP failed to do and that was create a goal.

yeah it takes passion too ;)

as for becks - even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

becks stood up to nothing, he [Poor language removed] off to spain then the states - zero commitment. bounce back? what from a red he got all on his own vs the argies. pish.

he like a few others are well past the sell by date. time to move on.

no one else created a goal for england except the referee, does that make saint becksy man of the match?

Beckham created a goal, end of story - look I held my hand up about Crouch, why don't you do the same thing.

And it was a penalty, end of.

italy started slow, and moved up the gears, built on a solid defensive foundation and the kind of surgical finishing precision football fans salivate over.

the thud and blunder, lets wheel becks out on a zimmer to create a goal because we are out of ideas football that england have relied on has finally come round and bitten the side on the arse.

better now and a move forward than maintaining the current amateurishness of the entire setup.

For what it's worth I thought Beckham did ok tonight, but then I thought SWP did ok in the first half. Right wing wasn't where our problem was.

Both full backs had horrid games. Bridge looked ropey when on the ball and very shaky in defence. Goodness knows what Richards was doing. The number of times he was found out of position was incredible.

No doubt Lescott will be a scapegoat in the press but of the back four I thought he had a better game than the other three. None of the defenders had any cover from the midfield though. Barry was given the run around by the Croatian playmaker (who had a very good game incidently), whilst Gerrard and Lampard once again had horrid games.

People will no doubt point the finger at McClaren but a number of things stand out for me.

Firstly he picked the team that most people thought he should have picked. There simply aren't players making a case for themselves in the PL so I'm not really sure what else he can do from a selection point of view.

Secondly the players surely have to shoulder some of the blame. Most of that team have vast experience and could probably run the game themselves over and above what the coach wants. Heck, the rugby team did just that in the WC. When the camera panned down the lineup for the anthems you saw wet blanket after wet blanket. When largely the same players fail under two managers there is something rotten in Denmark.

I have long said about the poor state of our youth academies and the lack of technically adept players they are producing. It seems that we're now at a crossroads regarding the action we take about this. When you look at performances like that it's little wonder that Wenger doesn't pick many English players.

I sincerely hope that we don't try and cover up the deficiencies in our players by inserting quotas because gifting players a spot based on their nationality won't make them better players. None of those out there tonight were short of top flight experience, what they were short of was quality, both mental and technical.

Hopefully this will provide the catalyst to really revamp the youth coaching in Britain so that we start producing players that aren't out-skilled by eastern European minnows every time we play them.

if that was a penalty then every match should see ten penalties.

becks created a goal so suddenly he is immune from criticism.

crouch is very poor and still englands worst ever striker.

the setup has to change, because if fans have faith in the current lot, then things are going to get a lot worse.

Oh, and that was about as much of a penalty as the Gerrard one against us. Yes he had his shirt tugged (once) but that's no reason to wait a few seconds until he knew he'd never get the ball before falling over. We all shouted and screamed when Gerrard did that to us so lets call a spade a spade.
