Transfer Rumour Thiago Silva

You said you see football differently. You do.. You look at at it stats and as a long term business. You said elsewhere havin no fans does not bother you.
But for id say 99 per cent that's what football is about. The experience. Goin to the game or watching it with your mates.
Signing players like silva may not be the best plan long term but if it helps us get to maybe a cup final or europe then it's a success. You say you don't see 12th place any difference to finishing in 6th or 7th.
Tell that to the supporters who travelled to away games in wolfsburg or lyon. The experience of that is what football fans savour. See for most football is not a business. It's their outlet and thing they look forward to even if the result does not go away.
I'm not sure if you have been to Goodison.
Days like the Chelsea game under big Dunc In December or when baines hit the screamer v Leicester and the stadium shook. We want more good days of course but signing a player or 2 who may improve us a bit now will help. We may never scale the heights again. But nice to have good wins, good away days and hopefully some success.
I understand all of that. I really do. I don't think trying to plan for long term success has to sacrifice a great deal of those things. We can still have amazing moments while passing on signing players who don't advance us to an endpoint of consistent success.

We're in 12th. There are 5 teams in the league that no questions asked have a better squad than we do. There are 3 that also might.

The team in fourth has bought two players who are better than anyone we will sign this window and it hasn't even opened yet. The team in 5th prints money. The team in 3rd actually has a long term strategy and it is paying dividends. They look set to lose no one from a squad that has outperformed us. And the top two teams are in the middle of the best 3 year run for any club in decades. That doesn't even mention specifically Spurs and Arsenal who we haven't done better then since 2014 at least.

Yes, I find it a little hard to see us competing next year. But I don't find it too hard for us to compete very soon after that, if we look at the situation that way and run the club like that is the case.

We should probably sack it all off then and move to the MLS.

No guarantee we ever have consistent success though. Plenty clubs who once had success now in a lot worse places then we are.

Any chance we can be flexible now? lol

Sure.

Im not normally a fan of aging players, its just that we have been linked to 2 of my favourite players recently.

Theres a massive risk in signing a 35 year old, especially 1 from a lesser league who has done it all.

But if players like Silva are available I consider them worth the risk.

Like I wouldnt be touching that Allan fella or Coutinho for any amount of money.

So you think Carlo has come here to work with players that may or may not turn out good in a couple of years.

Well ok then.
I hope we didn't sell Carlo on the idea that we would just buy elite players and I hope Carlo wasn't dumb enough to come here thinking we would do that because it is very likely impossible.

See I'm ok with that. Personally Ibra and Silva don't fall into my category of must sign. We talked about Ronaldo and however dumb you think I am I'm not so dumb as to say no to him. I'd swim the Atlantic and carry him on my back to Merseyside. Silva though is enough below his level in my eyes that I can pass.

The tough one for me is James because he is one of my favorite players, but ultimately it isn't really worth it I don't think. It's just so tough knowing where to draw the line at that I'd prefer we over extended and avoided anyone close.

So ok you wouldnt be happy signing a Top Draw CB for nowt but very hefty wages.
Cos you want to build for the future....so who would you sign , and what would he cost ?
Then what happens if he doesnt progress , just sell on for a big loss just like we've done these past years.

So who would you sign instead ?

I'm intrigued by the Gabriel lad the most. The numbers are very kind on that guy Todibo, but I don't see it when I watch so I'd pass. A guy who seems to pop up a lot in links to various PL clubs, I think it was Arsenal last summer, is Gladbach's Elvedi. I don't know that he has the same kind of ceiling as the other two but I like him enough. If it has to be a free my choice would be Malang Sarr.

Yes none of those guys are as good as Silva at his peak, I understand that. But we also aren't getting Silva at his peak.

Good realistic post and sadly true. You don’t improve unless you realistically appraise and accept your current position.
