To be a "big club"

Seriously i would class Everton as a big club , you have big support and a big history in English Football , you are on the same level as the oil rig and the chavs the only difference being you did receive a billion barrels of oil

Until Kenwright leaves the club and an innovative Chairman is brought in nothing will change at this club. The jobs for the boys cushy culture that he's created still facilitates around the club and you cant have success without high expectations its as simple as that.

1. Kenwright/Leadership
2. Proper recruitment i.e no Brands
3. BMD / more revenue / USM naming rights deal

In that order before we can begin to challenge again providing Carlo is still upto the task otherwise you need to add solid management as well to that list.

Always find that sort of table ridiculous to describe success.

The order should be ranked like the Olympic Medal table. League Titles and European Cup/CL being the ones that count.

Spurs' "success" will always be tainted by their lack of titles to everyone but their own fanbase.

Why do you care? If it makes you happy I will unilaterally award you the Everton are bigger than Spurs trophy.

Here to help.

This is how I see club sizes are perceived by others.

Top are Man United and RS people can argue which way round but they are the first 2 clubs most people associate with English football.

City and Chelsea are next when talking about the here and now they are both rich clubs that have won lots of recent trophies. Any youngsters growing up now will know these 2 as well as they know the 2 big reds.

Arsenal, Everton and Spurs are next. Arsenal are unlucky they have had such a lean few years or I would have put them with the other big reds. However they like us and Spurs are now just considered outside contenders. These clubs have got big pasts but ultimately aren't talked about in present day terms. Fans know who they are but not many people from outside their catchment area are likely to support them unless there is some connection.

Leeds, Newcastle, Villa are also big clubs with tradition but have not had as much an impact as the above 3. I know Villa have a European Cup but still feel they belong in this group.

There are other teams that could be argued for and against but I think the above 10 are the biggest if all different criteria is considered.

How clubs should be perceived and how they actually are to most is quite different.

I reckon based on media reporting and things you hear from other fans

Tier 1: United and Liverpool
Tier 2: Arsenal (now joined by Chelsea and City)
Tier 3: Spurs
Tier 4: Newcastle, Leeds, Everton, Villa, West Ham

Spells in the lower divisions are given a rose tinted view by the media and by small time fanbases at the expense of 8th-12th placed finishes in the top flight. Especially once those clubs come back up.

Most of it is laughable in relation to the likes of Leeds and Newcastle but as the years go on we only have ourselves to blame for such a poor and unsuccessful spell in our history since 1995.

Because its not an accurate reflection of "success"

Don't mistake that point for me bigging Everton up currently though. Spurs have been by far the bigger and better club in the last 10-15 years and you've had moments in that time that our fans would absolutely love to have (even though you've developed a tendency to be huge bottlers like ourselves, on a grander stage).

Swap in Villa for Spurs and promote Arsenal and I'd agree with that.

You can't argue with 7 league titles and a European cup for Villa. Arsenal certainly don't belong with Everton and Villa with 13 leagues.

Not having City bigger than Arsenal, or Chelsea either but like said above rich is the new big. However unless we start winning stuff again soon our past achievements are becoming footnotes as others overtake us in the now.

The problem we have, along with all the other teams outside the top 4, is that to get in amongst the 'big boys' you need a top class manager who can bring in top class players. Not only that you need to be able to keep hold of the top talent, as it's not just the top clubs here in England that will come sniffing around your good players, but the Spanish, German, & Italian giants will also be taking a keen interest.

Money has destroyed the competitive element in football now. It's unlikely you'll ever see another side like Nottingham Forest get promoted & then win the league the following season, followed by the European Cup the next year.

Sunderland have won as many leagues as Chelsea
I think that proves that a "big club" is not related to historic success. Nobody would even consider Sunderland anywhere near Chelsea. I worry that we are forgotten and will become a bury or Blackburn in the next 50 years.
