When I was in Scotland years ago, I spent the hour before bed most evenings trying to decipher the rules of cricket without result.

The problem in baseball isn't so much the rules as that something weird which tests your rules knowledge is bound to happen at least once a game.

Before this current crop the best American player was either Donovan who spent two months of his prime in Europe or Dempsey who spent a single season playing in a top half side. It's pretty different from what the English have.
