Today’s Football 2020/21 Season

Mark Palios (owner of Tranmere) was on the telly today. He said that they would probably lose money as the fans who would attend would be season ticket holders, so there wouldn't be any gate money. It would cost them £10,000 a match to put a game on with spectators.

If Tranmere would rather the fans be banned for financial reasons, my local team Southport who play in the Conference North, so a far smaller club, have taken a different view. Tbf 2,000 is a very decent crowd (capacity only about 6000 and never get many). lol

They've issued a statement

Southport Football Club welcomes the news from the Prime Minister today of a potential return to spectators, subject to tiers, within Stadia.

We will review the details as they are released, and will await confirmation as to which tier Sefton will be placed in. As soon as we have further news and are able to confirm, then more information as regards to the potential return of fans to The Pure Stadium will be released.

(Hate them using the sponsors name, which tbf they have to as they take the money, it's Haig Avenue!!!)

It's funny isn't it. My first thoughts when you mentioned Tranmere was- how on earth is it costing that much more to hold a game. I mean you need stewards but you probably have to be realistic about the number of stewards that are required.

Seems very unlikely - but I wonder have the some sort of insurance that compensates similar to wimbledon.

Yeah very true & I think unlikely. Wimbledon (the tennis tournament sorry) had a long term insurance bond to cover loss of revenue

Ah ok. Knowing the arrogance of people associated with football, I'd be amazed if any of them even thought to look for such an insurance.

Also, with turnovers as erratic as they are, who would insure them?

Tbh I'm not sure of the context and like Chinese whispers the more it's passed on the more chance of the sense of what was actually said being either lost or materialy altered. Was it to turn a profit yearly which would take a certain figure or was it just talking about matchday? They have to reimburse season ticket holders anyway and this cost would be less if 2,000 of them were let in. A bare minimum of stewarding and policing costs if fans are responsible and obey instructions - the refreshments, programmes etc don't even need to be available,

I'm just not sure on the breakdown at all and whether it's speaking about normal matchday costs or reduced costs. Hearing Cambridge United's chairman in the normally more expensive south, saying they can turn a matchday profit on 2000 so Tranmere obviously far more expensive, something doesn't seem right can't be a like for like comparison ?

I'd imagine a lot of facilities at smaller clubs will be closed on match day to reduce costings but Policing will still be the same costs.

I think personally a reduced capacity maximum will be 4000 so it would be ideal to trial alcohol to be drank in stands like Germany and at Rugby games.

If fans attended the ground for drinks it would generate more income plus with strict standards on entry I'd imagine you can't rock up to Goodison at 2:55 anymore so if fans have to be in the ground an hour before kickoff, you encourage get some drinks in and watch the game.

I know some will argue that people will get bladdered but that's what stewards and Policing will be trailed at.

I mean a couple of things on that. What strikesme is maybe they are not getting the ratio's of food stalls/programmes sellers correct? I mean if yoiu had an audience of 2000 people, you should be able to develop a plan to turn a profit. It won;t be to have people selling stuff for an expected 8,000 crowd (for example). I mean, what do Tranmere average? I'd guess 6-7k so it seems odd they would be losing money.

The 2nd point is more about ST holders. Ok they will have to reimburse if they've taken the money, but it's 2000 people they won't have to reimburse. I mean if you count the people entering as paying 0 then yes, you will lose money. If you count them as the cost of reibursement that will be a fairer way of doing it.

I mean maybe ticket prices make a difference. However it wouldn't explain why so Southport, who may get 2,000 will turn a profit? It looks to me like Palios is not thinking about it logically (and I quite like Palios).

I thought policing might be an issue. I think clubs and the gov have got to be sensible about this stuff if so. There's no real need for any major police presence, as there will be no rival fans. Im not sure it's right clubs, especially smaller clubs have to pay a policing bill for coppers overtime. That shouldn't happen. It's not needed.

Yes they were pretty much my points too although we have to be careful here as I'm just not sure of what exactly was the context and the question to which Palios gave his answer. Is there a side to it where perhaps it's politically beneficial for Palios to give such an answer?

Isn't he now leading some representative body for the lower leagues were they would be pushing for more spectators to be allowed in? It might be the answer best suited to his campaigning position.

I remember Wigan Athletic having all sorts of issues but essentially Policing funds is set for events and costing will have been set.

Policing will have to come to an arrangement but again if your not getting additional fan revenue, why should clubs fork out for police for 4000 fans if they can't afford it.

Bring back ale to the stands and you create that plus you won't be able to drink in a pub with a meal so that's leaves, Wetherspoons near Goodison for example and I doubt you can have 200 people in nevermind 2000.

Sell ale in the ground, get the revenue and that justify the means to an end.

I think they've stipulated tier two (best possible tier) would not allow alcohol unless accompanied by a substantial meal - sure pubs and the like could get around this, not so sure grounds could unless they were opening a restaurant or cafe part as opposed to takeaway food.

Probably a non starter with Covid tier two regulations
