Today’s Football 2021/22 Season

Problem with football nowadays is just money.

This isn’t isolated. Sporting CP won their league, a respected league at that, and lost 5-0 at home to Manchester City.

Was it 2-3 years ago that Porto suffered the same fate to Liverpool?

I’m sure it may be different if we were in their shoes, but it’s part of the reason why I’m losing my love for “elite” football, to be totally honest. It’s effectively a closed shop.

Even in the 90s and 00s though these teams all had money but the gap wasn’t as gaping. United were winning the league with points totals in the 80s, any team could beat them at any point, they made 4 UCL finals in Fergie’s entire reign.

Look at the Bundesliga winners when Wolfsburg Stuttgart etc. were winning it and Bayern didn’t even qualify for the CL.

Marseille Milan Porto Dortmund Inter all won CLs

Then at some point in the 2010s football just destroyed itself and now we have monopolies at the top of nearly every league, a closed shop in the CL, teams getting over 95 points in consecutive seasons, and everyone else getting absolutely destroyed by these top teams with hardly any chance of beating them.

Was only young in the 90s, but remember United playing the likes of Dynamo Kiev and Panathinaikos in Quarters and Semis.

The league anyone could literally beat anyone and it wasn’t a huge upset.

You’re right though, that’s where I’m falling out of love, because unless you’re in one of those elect clubs, you’re never winning a major trophy again.

Look at the league cup, no one gets a sniff at it anymore.

Lisbon were the champions weren’t they?

There’s not much point having a champions league when in reality most seasons only the following clubs have any chance of winning it

Bayern, City, PSG, Liverpool, Madrid, Chelsea

Some seasons you can add in Barcelona and Juve but they’ve become a bit pathetic now as well.

Sure there’ll be other teams who make semi finals or finals as a one off but they’re just giving the illusion of competition. They don’t win it.

It’s an absolute closed shop with those 6 or 7 teams just dwarfing the rest of European football by absolute miles.

It’s fine for those that support them, and for UEFA, and for the media, but for everyone else it’s a joke.
Champions League is being expanded with more prize money after 2024, and teams that don't qualify outright in their Leagues will be given invitations based on if their coefficient is high enough, that could see teams who finish 5th and 6th being demoted to the Europa League for some club who finished below them going into the CL.

Going to be an even bigger disparity between the have and have nots.

This is Uefa acting because of the failed ESL and wants to keep those clubs happy.

The game got destroyed when Oligarchs and Oil States were buying clubs mate, that's why football changed in the 2010s, transfers, wages went up and the bigger established clubs had to find ways to keep up with those Oil clubs by being more business savvy and growing turnover, that's why there is a big divide between the cabal clubs and the clubs not in the Cabal.

Don’t think that’s right is it?

Isn’t it going to be just a big mish mash mess.

So it’s 36 sides qualify automatically, 2 sides who have qualified for Europe, but not the CL, with the highest Coefficient Will be invited (this year it would have been Roma, Spurs) which is two spots, then the other two are

3rd place of 5th strongest league gets in (that would have been Monaco) and then the best ranked Champion not already in gets in (believe this was RB Salzburg).

Then they get thrown into a giant 40 team league where it’s “Randomly” allocated and you play 10 games against teams before the top 8 automatically progress and then, to even confuse things even more 9-16 play someone from 17-24tj in a two-legged play off with 25th lower out, effectively.

Basically… 4 extra games guaranteed for the “big” sides to fleece the fans. Then the R16 is to continue like it is now.

Europa League and Confwrence league will adapt exactly the same.

Wait for this forum if we get in again trying to figure it all out.

But yeah, no one can be palmed off, and they’ll relax the rule about number of teams allowed in, so in theory, it could end up with 8 teams from one country in the CL… (Highly unlikely, I’m aware).

The game hasn't changed, just the amounts involved. FFP was an attempt to sow up the champs league for the already established. If ffp had been around in Shankley's day, Liverpool would still be second division team. Your success is no more organic than City, Chelsea or even Arsenal. All had massive outside investment turning them from also rans into Champions.
The only difference is that when Littlewoods pumped their gambling money into Liverpool, there wasn't a cabal of shysters and con artists trying to stop them.
Your pathetic bleatings and hatred of all things are going to make you ill.

The games being ruined by clubs like franchise LFC trying to form break away leagues and making sure their owners keep their shareholder prices high and make a good profit.

Transfers and wages were always going to go up with the money being pumped in by Sky and other tv companies as players will always want a part of the money.

Invitations based on if their coefficient is a horrible idea and purely to keep up the numbers of people watching on TV, the Champions League has become less and less interesting for decisions like this.

A big problem is that a lot of armchair fans prefer it this way

They wouldn't want Sporting to get through

It would "spoil" the competition for them

There was once a time where the underdog could get decent support from the neutral supporter. Now a lot of neutrals just want the richest teams in the closing stages because they have the name players, and name players is what it's all about

Who cares about the "smaller" sides and nations actually having a chance?

Much more fun to watch The Super League gang play against one another. Who cares about teams from Portugal, Holland, Scotland, Austria etc?

You'll see it in this very thread if someone manages to pull off an upset. A bunch of people whinging because a team defied the odds. Sport used to have more to it than than just being a shallow commerical form of physical elitism

A great post, and your evidence is here:

LAUGHABLE comparing a local Merseyside family being custodians of both clubs in the city of Liverpool that the Moore's family funding is comparable to a oil state.

They funded both clubs but the biggest spenders were a multitude of clubs in that era.

Haha comparing funding by a despotic constant human rights abusing state who bought a football club to distract from those daily crimes in a Sportswashing program and breaking every rule of FFP that you are on your third investigation.

1st proceedings the upstanding Infantino? threw it out with paltry fine, no wonder he lives in the UAE.?

2nd proceedings your club delayed proceedings with no cooperation that the five year statute was exhausted that CAS had no power to go any further and ban your club, but they fined you for the uncooperative behaviour in the case.

3rd proceedings ongoing with the PL, again your club stalling it and being uncooperative.

Like Guardiola's bizarre rant the other day screaming for respect and adulation like the established clubs get, he hates the fact that what he's done he looks around and sees nothing but dismayed looks and shrugged shoulders because he knows deep down its hollow like Lance Armstrong's Tour De France titles.

Football was finished the moment FFP was brought in.

Essentially legislation designed to keep the haves and the have nots apart.

The fact European Football still calls itself a "competition" is utterly laughable.

FFP is the equivalent of giving Nadal or Federer a 1 set head start against their opponent because of their previous success.

Laughable and disgusting. Hopefully Usmanov and the Saudi's push the boundaries with some big sponser deals and if they get hooked then take UEFA/PL to the highest court and get FFP dismantled for good.
