Are you seriously including international sports in this discussion which don't even have leagues?

Are you really including IPL which is a essentially mini-tournament and franchised per city & ran by billionaires?

Are you really including rugby union which has always had relegation/promotion except for now which is a temporary pause due to COVID?

Are you really including aussie rules footie which can't have promotions/relegations because they only have enough teams for one league?

Honestly man, try harder...
Mate the point is there are lots of sports out there and most of them have their quirks at the highest level but they can all still be fun and entertaining regardless.

You and Nate have decided that only football counts and that's fine, I'm just not going to be so narrow-minded.

Excuse me but that is completely untrue. All we said is we find American Football ridiculously boring. Neither of us even brought up relegation - that was you.

I mean you even know I watch the NBA so you're just being precious.

Nate did and also mentioned basketball in the post.

Ah, page before, but that's him. You know I have zero problem with all the other American sports. NFL is just flat out boring as balls.
I get it isn't for everyone, the weird thing to me was him saying without jeopardy (ie relegation) it doesn't count. Almost nothing has that.

Frankly I think the reason it is so important that football has relegation is that the top of the table is often not entertaining enough to maintain interest so something else is needed. Other sports create interest and entertainment differently.

There would be no incentive for every club below the 20 in the PL to play matches if they couldn't get promoted though. And then how do you decide which 20 teams make the cut.

I think its also down to the relative strength of the clubs below the ring fenced ones, in any sport. Like, in Merica, other than College Football, is Merican Football played by clubs at a lower, organised standard? In England, they are (again) looking at ring fencing the top RU league, cos the drop in standards, income, and interest outside of it, is paltry. But they need to balance that with a well financed, well followed, ambitious team having that dream throttled. Exeter RFU being the obvious example of that being a success.

In English/UK football, its very difficult to explain to newer viewers from abroad that hardly anyone goes to a match for entertainment or "quality". Its cos they, their Dad, and Grandad have done for generations. I have a mate who drives to every Scunthorpe home from Bristol That is not to be enteratained, believe me. The ancient football pyramid here is cherished , and whilst not without its faults, hardly any football fan would want it attacked or to become worthless

I get that, I'm not saying get rid of it, I just think people view it as necessary because without it in football there isn't a lot of stakes on too many matches. But other places have found other ways to avoid having tons of meaningless games. It isn't lesser.

I get it, I'm not suggesting anyone is better or worse, I'm just pointing out really that relegation and the pyramid isn't superior to any other system, it doesn't make football more of a sport than others. I find it weird to rubbish other places, and not just the US, because what they enjoy doesn't force clubs to fight for survival.

I did bring up jeopardy/relegation, and i get that you think it’s a narrow view, but it’s not just about that tbh. My main point (poorly made) was that I do find all the us sports boring, whereas I can get engaged, excited and watch a cricket match or Aussie rules game, even without relegation involved.

The spectacle of hand egg, baseball or basketball just don’t engage or entertain me enough, though I can appreciate the skills involved.

Yeah I get it, not everyone likes every sport. I think Aussie Rules is pretty cool but I can't actually watch it for the entire length of a match.

Yep. Merican sports are ring fenced, so why wouldnt the MLS be?

Generally, ours are not, so we find ring fencing a bit strange. Even if it makes absolute sense for the future of some sports.
