Pep signed him because of his consistency. He does a job which appears rudimentary to the uneducated, but to do it at a very high standard week in week out is incredibly difficult.

Here’s an example, from an app which tracks player performances based on key stats. There is pretty much no other midfielder in the league hitting the consistency he was last season.

To call such a player a “fraud” and “terrible” just shows you either don’t understand football, or are trying to be provocative.

As I said I think he's good because City are good. His style of play would stink in a team that actually had to play against teams with comparable talent across the board. As it did today.

Can use that argument for any good holding mid though really. Sergio Busquets doesn’t look very creative without Iniesta and Xavi next to him. Gattuso doesn’t have much of a forward pass on him when he’s not playing with Pirlo. Casemiro is probably one of the best I’ve seen in that position and has a very good passing range but he still would rather roll it to Modric or Kroos to play the incisive ball more often than not.
