I recall stating unequivocally last year on this forum that the problem with United was more to do with their players and less to do with David Moyes.
Some agreed with me but most trotted out the line of "Yeah, but they were champions the season before...." I insisted that it was more to do with the dross they had on the books. Safe to say I was in the minority.
Well, after their finish last season (impotent to say the least), their start this season, culminating with tonight's defeat to a lower league side in humiliating fashion, I think it's more than fair to say that my assertion has been proved 100% correct.
Because you win the league the prior year guarantees nothing. Furthermore, all the clubs around them strengthened in some form or fashion while United waited until they got Mata in the January window. When looking at their team last season, there were only three or four players that would have made it into Everton's side. The rest wouldn't have even made the bench.
They've done nothing really to address there main issue which was defense and specifically their CB's. They need two. Nothing against Evans, Smalling, and Jones, but they aren't Manchester United standard. (The irony was that Fellaini, based on his play with us, was of that standard but their supporters chose to focus on him rather than their backline.)
Now, I'm going to say that even with Di Maria, they're going to continue to struggle until January when they can get two top drawer CB's in. By that time it'll be too late and they'll finish somewhere like they did last season. 6th to 9th is nailed on for Manchester United.
