Polish side Legia Warsaw have announced that they may have fielded an ineligible player in last night’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Celtic.
In a statement released on their website Legia said:
“The club announces that in connection with the second leg third qualifying round match of the Champions League Celtic FC v Legia Warsaw, UEFA have opened an investigation on the participation by Bartosz Bereszyński.
“The club is preparing relevant information and an explanation which will be sent to UEFA today.
“The result of the investigation will be communicated immediately after its completion.”
It is believed that Bereszynski was red-carded in a European match last season but was not registered in time to serve his suspension for the second qualifying round tie with Irish club St Patrick’s Athletic.
It is believed that Bereszynski was sent off for Legia in a Europa League match last season. However, the club’s failure to register him for the St Patrick’s tie meant he would have had to serve his suspension against Celtic.
The 22-year-old was an 88th minute substitute in last night’s defeat at Murrayfield which saw Celtic eliminated from the competition. That result could be overturned if Legia are found guilty of fielding an ineligible player.
