They don't. But the player who holds it should be a leader themselves otherwise it makes a mockery of the concept of team leader.

I can't think of a reason Jagielka should be our captain. He doesn't organise his back four, he doesn't act to confront referees on behalf of the team, he obviously feels uncomfortable representing the club in post match interviews.

He's the captain Moyes made just before leaving for United and he's saddled us with one of our worst in my memory.

Oh David.

Just on this, as much as I love Jagielka, he probably wasn't the absolute best choice for captain as far as being a vocal leader goes. I'm not doubting his talent or commitment here by the way, I'd still have him as our first choice CB alongside Willliams.

I put it forward for arguments' sake, that over the same period of time, Gareth Barry has been a kind of unofficial captain. Ashley Williams looks more like a natural leader to me in similar mould, although he does have experience what with being Wales' skipper.

And who else could have realistically taken in 2013 as well?

Barry wasn't here yet, Baines isn't a leader and Coleman wasn't ready

It was down to Jags, Howard or perhaps Fellaini as a long shot, and I think Moyes made the correct choice

Sweden v Netherlands on ITV4 live tonight. Should be interesting. Looking to see if the Dutch are in permanent decline (as befits that rubbish league of theirs and the lack of decent Dutch talent in top leagues).
