Oh well, it could have been worse I suppose

At least Southampton are a goal up and Liverpool didn't get an away goal

All Southampton need is one at Anfield and then Liverpool need three

Don't think away goals count until extra time but tbh you expect them to get the 3 regardless, you know what they are like

But remember Mike.....away goals only count at the end of extra time.

If the RS are leading 2-1 after ninety minutes it will go into extra time.

Last season they emerged with an away draw at Stoke.

They still needed pennoes to go through.

It will be tough enough for them to go through after tonight.

Especially if Saints score....which I think they will.

One of the worst rules in football, this. And yes, it's in Southampton's favour, but it's still a dreadful rule.

The RS had 90 mins to get an away goal. If they win 1-0 at home, then Southampton get another 30 mins to get an away goal.

If the RS win 2-1 then the tie should be over after the 90 mins! It's a complete shambles. The correct rules should be that away goals count in regular play, but if the tie goes to ET, away goals rule does not apply. That gives both sides 90 mins each to get away goals.

They'll get through alright, nothing surer.

Fine opportunity this for Krapp to build on his stellar record in cup finals.

You have to hand it to him, they haven't bottled a single one.

I think it is a great rule and I would love to see UEFA bring it in FIFA their competitions.

I tell you why.

We often see European second legs where a team is 2-0 down from the first leg and take a lead in the second leg at home.

United versus the RS in the EL last season is a good example of this.

That was turning into a great match as United pressed for the aggregate equaliser.

Then the RS, 2-0 up from their home leg, broke away and equalised on the night with about half an hour left and the life was just sucked out the game as United then needed another two goals to win.

That wouldn't happen in the EFL Cup with their rule.....even if the go into five minutes of injury time in the ninety the tie is still very much alive.

I agree with your point about the away goal being scrapped in extra time, though.....the away team in the second leg is given a definite advantage and if they score early on, the chances of the home team winning the tie virtually disappear rendering the last twenty five minutes or so academic.
